2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing trading cards delve into the background of how the first in a planned series of films that delve into side stories for the expansive franchise. Like Journey to the Force Awakens, the set is done with nostalgia in mind, borrowing from Original Trilogy card designs. The old-school Topps Heritage-style card stock is also being used for the release.

Hobby boxes fall in line with a lot of other recent Star Wars sets, delivering a pair of premium inserts from a selection that includes autographs, sketch cards, patch cards and printing plates.

2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing Base Set Basics

The main part of 2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing looks at the history of the Death Star, a focal point of the film. It’ll chart its building and, ultimately, its destruction. For collectors, the big draw will be the first major cards for the new film. That said, the majority of the set will likely feature images from previous films. A few cards with images from the Rogue One trailer are at the end of the checklist.

All told, the Rogue One: Mission Briefing base set has 110 cards. They use the same basic design as 1983 Topps Return of the Jedi, complete with the bright red borders.

Hobby packs have at least one parallel. These come in several colors including Death Star, Blue (1:4 packs), Grey (/100), Gold (/50) and Orange (1/1). Grey, Gold and Orange are all exclusive to hobby packs. Printing Plates can also be found.

Autographs

2016 Topps Rogue One: Mission Briefing is another set with a large autograph checklist. More than 70 different signers from various corners of a galaxy far, far away are included. Characters from Rogue One and The Force Awakens are not among them.

If the design feels familiar, it should. They borrow from the character card subset that kick off the third series of 1980 Topps Empire Strikes Back trading cards. Parallels come in Death Star (/50), Blue (/25), Gold (/10), Orange (1/1) and Printing Plates.

Tough multi-signature cards are included, but only in hobby packs. There are two Dual Autographs, a pair of Triple Autographs and a Fight Pilot Quad Book Autograph.

Autographs in the product are done with stickers.

Additional Inserts

2016 Topps Star Wars Rogue One: Mission Briefing Patch Cards focus on vehicles used throughout the franchise.

The product has six regular insert sets, which combine to land one per hobby pack. They include Character Stickers, Comic Strips, The Death Star, Heroes of the Rebel Alliance, Villains of the Galactic Empire and Montages.

This set was originally planned and solicited as Road to Rogue One but was changed shortly after.

My son got a special patch card that says 45/50.

My other kids patch cards don’t have a number like that.

    What are those?

    • Ryan Cracknell 27 December, 2016 at 01:37

Sounds like a parallel — almost the same but with the serial number to show it’s more rare.

  2. Christopher Payne 28 December, 2016 at 20:14

In this article (thanks for this, btw!) You mention in several places that orange parallel cards are 1/1 which I took to mean one per pack or perhaps one per hobby box. However, on the foil packaging of the cards, it says the orange parallels are 1/12,206. Can you shed any light on this? I have one orange card out of 3 hobby boxes. I am either incredibly lucky, based on the odds on the foil packaging, or a bit unlucky by your numbers. Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • Ryan Cracknell 30 December, 2016 at 12:05

1/1 refers not to odds but print run. They’re one-of-ones. /25 means there are 25 of that particular card, etc.

I received a numbered Jyn Erso gold numbered (015/100) puzzle piece card with a light blue border. Has anyone seen any others like this? I pulled it from one of the 10 pack/special patch card boxes.
