1981 Donruss Baseball isn’t a fancy set. Most would argue that it’s not even an overly attractive set. But it is an important one. Along with Fleer, it gave collectors a choice when it came to mainstream baseball cards. Following some court battles, the decades-spanning monopoly Topps held was broken. Donruss, a company that in recent years made sets for entertainment properties like The Dukes of Hazzard, KISS and CHiPs, was in the baseball card business.

And while their first set is marred by errors, lacks big-time Rookie Cards and is drab at many points, it’s a beginning. And innovation wasn’t far behind.

Base Set Basics

The 1981 Donruss Baseball checklist consists of 600 cards plus five unnumbered checklists for 605 total.

Looking back, 1981 wasn’t a great year for Rookie Cards — and that’s if you land all the key names. 1981 Donruss Baseball doesn’t. It does have Tim Raines and future basketball star Danny Ainge leading the way with the likes of Mookie Wilson and Jeff Reardon making up the second tier of fan favorites.

1981 Donruss Baseball Tim Raines

And while they likely wouldn’t be worth a lot today, Donruss did miss a couple of key players found elsewhere in 1981. Fernandomania was one of baseball’s biggest stories in 1981 with Fernando Valenzuela winning both the National League Cy Young and Rookie of the Year Awards. Fleer has the Dodgers star on their checklist (albeit listing him as “Fernand”). Topps included Valenzuela on both a three-player card in their flagship set as well as a solo card in 1981 Topps Traded. He’s nowhere to be found in 1981 Donruss Baseball.

It’s the same for Harold Baines. Although never a major name for any prolonged amount of time in the hobby, he was respected. Even bigger now is the fact that he’s in the Hall of Fame. Fleer and Topps both have Rookie Cards for him. Donruss does not.

Outside of RCs, other key cards on the 1981 Donruss Baseball checklist include a second-year Rickey Henderson, Nolan Ryan, multiple Pete Rose cards and Ozzie Smith wearing the yellow and brown of the Padres.

There’s also the Best Hitters #537 card, which is a throwback to some of the hobby’s classic multi-player cards.

Errors and Variations

Error and variation hunters have plenty to chase in 1981 Donruss Baseball. Spelling mistakes, stat mix-ups, mistaken identities and slight printing changes are all in play. And while not every error is corrected, variations expand the master checklist by more than 30 cards.

In case you’re getting ready to hunt for baseball card gold, none of the errors (or their correction variations) bring any major values today.

Launching the Brand

Donruss went big when it came to launching their premier baseball set. To help promote dealer sales, special uncut sheets of eight cards were given to dealers.

To help push the cards once they arrived, the card maker launched a massive campaign that included the back covers of 25 issues of DC Comics titles for their May and June covers (which actually hit stands in February and March).

According to both a letter Donruss set to prospective sellers and the original sell sheet, this advertising campaign reached 25 million kids.
