1981 Fleer Baseball Checklist, Team Set Lists and Details

Share:

1981 Fleer Baseball is both a beginning and a culmination. After decades of trying to get a foothold into the baseball card business, including long legal battles, the company finally got its wish. And while the checklist is lined with mistakes, the set helped give collectors something that hadn’t had in a long time — a choice.

1981 Fleer Baseball Box

In 1980, collectors had Topps. A year later, the roster of sets grew by two with both Fleer and Donruss joining the mix to vie for counter space in corner stores, grocery stores and the various other places baseball cards were sold.

Overview

With 660 cards, 1981 Fleer Baseball sits pretty much exactly in the middle of Topps‘ 726-card checklist and Donruss’ 605. Players are arranged by team, adding a level of consistency to the set, not to mention something that stands out when you page the set and put it in a binder.

Fleer does a good job of covering the year’s major rookies, even if the group doesn’t have a big hobby following today. These include Harold Baines, Kirk Gibson and Danny Ainge, who went on to bigger things in basketball.

1981 Fleer Baseball Danny Ainge RC

There’s also Fernando Valenzuela, although RC is one of many errors that line the checklist. His name is spelled “Fernand” on the front. A corrected version does not exist.

1981 Fleer Baseball Fernando Valenzuela RC UER

The one big miss as far as rookies go is Tim Raines.

From a star standpoint, a second-year Rickey Henderson and Nolan Ryan top things from a value perspective. One thing that 1981 Fleer Baseball does is provide multiple cards to highlight various award winners and league leaders. While other companies have done the same, the cards here use the same general base design to stealthily work them onto the checklist.

Something a Little Different

The design isn’t a huge departure from other sets but it does try to differentiate itself from what collectors had come to expect from Topps. For starters, there’s the card stock. It’s bright on both sides. This adds some crispness to the cards, particularly on the backs. It’s also a major contrast from the dark backs Topps had at the time.

Photos are largely portraits, although there are some action shots. It doesn’t make for a very exciting release in this regard, but many of the portraits are solid in capturing both some personality and the era.

1981 Fleer Ozzie Smith

Another way Fleer tried to one-up, or rather two-up, Topps was with its pack size. Each wax pack of 1981 Fleer Baseball has 17 cards compared to Topps’ 15. 1981 Donruss beats them both, though, with 18 cards per pack.

Errors and Variations

Everyone makes mistakes. This set makes a lot of them. Some are on the front, mixing up players or misspelling their name. Others get stats and years mixed up on the back — including offering up numbers from the 11th century instead of the 20th.

Perhaps the most infamous of the 1981 Fleer Baseball errors is that of Graig Nettles. The back of the error has him as “Craig.”

Many, but not all, of the errors were corrected after the earliest print runs. This makes for more than 20 different variations on the checklist.

Look Out for “The Hand”

Another 1981 Fleer Baseball variation isn’t an error but rather a slight printing mark found on the back of six cards. It’s a squiggle that’s often referred to as a “small hand” that’s towards the bottom of the card.

The handful of cards have variations with and without the “hand.”

The Earliest Days of Fleer Baseball

This isn’t the first set of Fleer baseball cards. Far from it. You can go back several decades for early cards featuring baseball players. For example, there’s 1932 Fleer Whiz Bang, a rare multi-sport set that includes a trio of baseball stars: Gabby Hartnett, Goose Goslin and Lefty Grove.

In 1959, the company made a big push, signing Ted Williams to an exclusive deal and creating a set dedicated to the legend. After this came a couple of sets consisting entirely of retired legends, a concept that was clearly ahead of its time when you look at the role of nostalgia in the modern hobby.

Battling for a Baseball Card License

1963 Fleer Baseball saw the company offer direct competition to Topps with cards of current players. It wasn’t a comprehensive set, though, as Topps had exclusive deals with a majority of the league’s players. This was the last time Fleer did a set of baseball cards with current players until 1981.

In the meantime, the did more sets based on the past as well as introducing their team logo stickers.

Throughout much of the 1960s, Fleer was trying to compete with Topps. They brought complaints based on Topps’ use of exclusive player contracts. The FTC originally ruled in Fleer’s favor but it was overturned. However, they left an opening that baseball cards were still possible as long as they didn’t include gum.

As the MLB Players Association evolved and started looking to expand revenue, Fleer was one of the companies that was approached for a group license similar to what Panini holds today. However, Fleer balked as they’d have to wait several years for Topps’ individual deals to expire.

Moving into the 1970s, Fleer proposed other items similar to cards like stamps, stickers and player plaques. But in the meantime, Topps and the MLBPA had signed a new deal and things were good between them. After multiple proposals were turned down, Fleer looked to the courts in 1975, sighting Topps’ monopoly.

It took several years, but a ruling eventually went Fleer’s way in 1980 and the MLBPA was told to offer group licenses for baseball cards. That led to Fleer and Donruss being granted deals starting in 1981.

I have a TOPPS Roberto Clemente 1954 Series card # 251. It shows a full face with a designation stating Outfielder Brooklyn Dodgers then the square logo with point up showing baseball and script written Dodgers. To the right of face in which the hat he wears has an M for Montreal minor league team. Bottom right has figure from waist up swing bat, signature and below that 1954 PROSPECT. Back has pro history batting and fielding, inside baseball cartoon. What is value and why it’s not listed on full sets. Picture available if interested.
