Welcome to a long weekend edition of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a fun and quick look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports cards and sports.
Between all the cookouts, hot dogs and gatherings with friends and family this weekend, many of us will find ourselves with a little extra time to sort through our stacks of new cards or sift through some old friends. With baseball going full swing towards the All-Star break, the NBA free agency period kicking off and the Stanley Cup Finals wrapping up, there’s lots going on in sports.
Card-wise, it’s a bit of a breather. New products keep coming out, but they’re not quite the marquees hobby-wide. This week saw a couple of long-delayed products finally arrive with 2021 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary Baseball and 2020-21 SP Authentic Hockey. Both have audiences but it’s still 2022 Topps Series 2 Baseball and 2021 Panini Prizm Football that are driving recent releases. Things pick up in a big way next week with the arrival of 2021-22 Panini Prizm Basketball.
As far as players go, Cale Makar was the big winner hobby-wise during the NHL playoffs. A Conn Smythe-winning performance to go with his first Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman have given his cards a major boost.
With lots of player movement happening in the NBA, Dejounte Murray cards got a boost following his trade to Atlanta where he’ll form a formidable duo with Trae Young. His RCs can be found in 2016-17 products.
