2021 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary Baseball Carries a Big Base Set

2021 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary Baseball delves into the past, present and future of both base and baseball cards with a massive base set. Part of the Chrome family, Refractors are also plentiful and autographs make themselves known.

Among the contents in every hobby box is one autograph.

Similar to 2021 Bowman Chrome Baseball, there’s a separate Hobby LITE configuration that is more centered on base cards and parallels rather than the hunt for signatures.

2021 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary Baseball Checklist Overview

The main set is a large 700 cards. Besides the usual veterans and rookies, this is a Topps Chrome rarity in that it also has retired stars. The idea is that is looks back on Topps’ history as the company celebrates in 70th anniversary in baseball cards.

The design gives the 1952 Topps Baseball design a chromium makeover, similar to the 1952 Redux Chrome inserts found in 2021 Topps Baseball retail packs.

Refractors Galore

If the base set wasn’t challenging enough, there are more than 30 different types of Refractors, making for a massive parallel rainbow.

Autographs

Between the large base set and equally big Refractor lineup, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that 2021 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary doesn’t have a lot of additional inserts. But there are autographs.

In addition to the base versions, the following parallels can also be found:

  • Refractors – /199
  • Aqua Refractors – /150
  • Blue Prism Refractors (/99 (hobby packs only)
  • 70th Anniversary Platinum Wave Refractors – /70
  • Gold Refractors – /50
  • Orange Refractors – /25 (hobby packs only)
  • Black Refractors – /10
  • Red Refractors – /5
  • Superfractors – 1/1

Hobby LITE doesn’t promise signatures like regular hobby boxes. However, collectors can find exclusive Pink Refractor autographs randomly inserted. These have 15 copies each.

This sounds like a fun and interesting set, although unfortunately since it is Chrome it will likely be fairly expensive to put together. I also don’t like all of the parallels, especially since often the best way to tell them apart is by the print run and several of them have the same print run, leaving us middle-aged red and green colorblind males to resort to asking their wives if this card looks like it’s a green refractor or a green WAVE refractor. Sheesh.
