Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – July 14, 2023
Welcome to another Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take quick and fun look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards.
It’s been a pretty slow week for sports, at least from the perspective of hobby impact. Yes, baseball had its All-Star Game in Seattle and the festivities surrounding it. Lots of big names were on hand but the game itself was a pretty quiet one. No disrespect to Elias Díaz, but his winning the game’s MVP isn’t going to turn into a long-term spike for his cards.
Outside of the happenings in Seattle, buzz continues to surround Elly De La Cruz. Not only is he putting up impressive numbers for the Reds, but he’s doing it with style and flair. The biggest example of that came last weekend when he stole second, third and home in the same at-bat. The ensuing Topps Now card, which has a spectacular shot of De La Cruz sliding across the plate, sold 30,759 copies.
Many collectors are getting their first looks at the 2023-24 NBA rookie class with Summer League play. While the chatter continues to be about Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs cut his time short after a couple of unspectacular games. Portland’s Scoot Henderson garnered plenty of attention before an injury shut him down. The shoulder strain doesn’t appear to be major, though.
Baseball will be getting back to normal over the weekend. 2023 Topps Chrome Baseball looms on the horizon as well, slated for release on July 26.
