The 2022 Topps Update Series Baseball Variations keep with what started in Series 1 and Series 2. That means both Short Print (SP) and Super Short Prints (SSP). Ultra Short Prints also returning, keeping with the mascot-superstar mash-ups of Series 2.

Like usual, collectors should be looking for alternate images as they bust packs of 2022 Topps Update Series Baseball. With retired legends returning, that’s another easy giveaway as they don’t have standard base cards.

For the Ultra Short Prints, which are not listed anywhere on the packaging and meant to be a surprise (albeit an expected one at this point as they have become the norm), they take a superstar’s 2022 base card and transform it into a mascot card.

If you pull a card that looks pretty much like a base card but has a serial number /300 on the back, it’s an Advanced Stats parallel. Besides the serial number, these change up the stats box and use more modern sets of analytics.

How Tough Are 2022 Topps Update Variations to Pull?

Depending on the variation level, SP and SSP cards range from not all that tough to rare.

Short Print Image Variations are 1:42 packs for both hobby and blasters, and 1:13 hobby jumbo. This means that they’ll show up regularly. However, with a large checklist, they’ll become a little tougher to find once the initial rush of pack busting passes.

Super Short Prints are rare no matter how you look at it. In standard hobby packs, they’re 1:1,255 packs. That’s more than 1:50 boxes. Blaster packs are pretty much the same at 1:1,256 packs while the more expensive hobby jumbo packs are 1:383 packs, or close to 1:40 boxes.

Odds for 2022 Topps Update Series Ultra Variations are not known. They are not listed among the odds on any pack types.

Using the Codes on the Back

Wondering whether the CMP codes on the back work? They do. Like most of Topps sets, the codes at the end of the fine print differentiate different types of cards. Base have one sequence while inserts—including variations—have another. While meant for production and not collectors, these codes are are quick way to confirm variations.

These are the CMP code endings you need for telling 2022 Topps Update base cards from variations:

  • Base – 241
  • Short Print Image Variations (SP) – 259
  • Super Short Print Image Variations (SSP) – 260
  • Ultra Short Print Image Variations – 261

Just pulled Fredbird card #205 ultra ssp. Fredbird head on Yadier Molina’s body. Can send picture if you would like.

@Erik – if you want to move that Fredbird I’d love to add one to my Topps Cardinals collection.

I don’t know why, but Topps Flagship SP/SSP’s are probably my favorite thing to PC. I absolutely love them.
