2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variations Guide
The 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball variations are heading to the ballpark, but not necessarily during an actual game.
Customary for the flagship set, there are both Short Print and Super Short Print Variations that swap out the regular photos for other ones. It’s still early to know if there’s a theme throughout, but based on some of the earliest ones to surface as well as history from recent years, there are some things in common.
Warm-ups and pre-game activities are definitely in the 2021 Topps Series 1 Baseball variations mix. These often picture players in different uniforms or casual attire. Others are from special games like the Field of Dreams, making cornstalks a photo focal point.
Retired legends are also back. These are easy to spot because they’re greats from the past appearing on 2022 Topps base cards.
Ultra Short Print Variations are back. Not listed among the pack odds, these are believed to be the toughest of all the variations in the product. Topps introduced these a couple of years ago so they shouldn’t come as a major surprise.
Advanced Stats cards are also back in 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball. Fronts are the same, but the stats on the back are different. They’re also serial numbered to 300. It’s likely that all regular player cards have Advanced Stats cards. Because they’re similar to parallels, they’re not listed in the guide below.
How Tough Are 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variations?
Specific print runs are not announced for variations. However, odds are available on packs.
SP Variations are 1:112 hobby, 1:34 hobby jumbo, 1:98 retail and 1:112 blaster packs. 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball SSP Variations are extremely tough, landing 1:3,341 hobby, 1:1,018 hobby jumbo, 1:2,922 retail and 1:3,342 blaster packs.
As for Ultra Short Print Variations, odds for those are only on hobby jumbo packs — 1:39,228 packs. It’s not known if they’re exclusive to the one place.
Confirming Variations on the Back
The photo on the front isn’t the only way to identify and confirm an SP or SSP variation. While there isn’t a clear tag on the back, the CMP codes in the fine print continue to lend a hand to those with sharp eyes or a magnifying glass within reach.
Meant for the production side of things and not necessarily collectors, these codes help identify different card types — like variations. You’ll find it at the end of the fine print on the back next to the URL for the Topps website.
The only digits you need to pay attention to are the last ones. Here’s are the endings to look for to tell base cards from variations:
- Base – 543
- Short Print Variations (SP) – 560
- Super Short Print Variations (SSP) – 561
- Ultra Variations – 562

2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball Variations Checklist

Now that you’ve seen them all, what’s your favorite one of the 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball variations?
Looks like an error in Yaz’ last name…
There is a Cal Raleigh too
Tatis SP is an error…position listed is Pitcher, and stats on back are pitching categories but with his hitting stats.
I FOUND A NUMBERED CARD TO 300 WITH CODE 050563. ANY IDEAS
@JIM – It’s mentioned in the article. Sounds like an Advanced Stats parallel.
Every year Topps does Jackie Robinson variations and every year the card back has the same incorrect info. He led the league in stolen bases in 1947 and 1949. He never led the league in slugging percentage in those years.
I picked up the Ultra Variation of Ke’bryan Hayes reverse image. Would you have an idea as to how many may have been produced ?
If it’s not numbered, print runs haven’t been announced.
I think its annoying that Topps couldn’t keep the number locations consistent for boxing and set collectors. Now I’ll have to pennysleeve some players and put them in a box upside down. You’d think they’d figure this out after nearly 100 years. Hey Fanatics, take note. that is annoying
I have a Franco from opening day with him blowing a bubble 5/10 auto the variation isn’t on. This list
I pulled a card that has French writing on the back of it. The code ends in 943. It’s out of 73, but I’m finding no variations regarding this type of card.
It’s listed among the inserts on the main Heritage checklist: https://www.beckett.com/news/2022-topps-heritage-baseball-cards/
Have you had a chance to start compiling the series 2 variants? so far, i have seen new numbers in the code on the backs. 847 is base and the other is 865 for one of the variants.
