2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Variations Gallery
2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball variations come in a couple of different forms. Topps confirmed two sets of short prints when the set was first announced. One is a continuation from 2017 with more Capless Variations. Jackie Robinson Day Variations bring over a theme used in the past in other Topps Baseball sets.
And then there are Team Swap Error Variations that play with baseball fans’ emotions, listing stars on rival teams.
2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Jackie Robinson Day Variations
On of baseball’s best additions in recent years is Jackie Robinson Day. Every April 15, the anniversary of Robinson breaking MLB’s color barrier, players around the league suit up wearing the legend’s number 42. It’s just one part of the league paying respect to Robinson and his important legacy.
The 2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Jackie Robinson Day Variations are simple enough. They use images of players wearing one of the commemorative jerseys. That means the thing to look for is the number 42 on what they’re wearing.
2016 Topps Series 2 Baseball used a similar approach for some of their variations.
Jackie Robinson Day Variations land 1:106 hobby packs. In addition to there, parallels also exist. GQ Logo Swap versions (1:422 hobby packs) have the regular ‘GQ’-style logo replaced by a lady’s face. Black versions fall 1:41,298 packs. Select cards also have Jackie Robinson Day Autograph (1:535), Autograph Black and White (1:955) and Autograph Black (1:38,544).
2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Capless Variations
Capless SSP cards take a straightforward approach as well. Simply put, players aren’t wearing any hats or helmets in the alternate photos.
This is a carryover from last year where similar cards were included.
2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Capless Variations land 1:121 hobby packs. Like the Jackie Robinson Day Variations, there are parallels as well: GQ Logo Swap (1:303 hobby), and Black (1:28,898 hobby).
Team Swap Error Variations
Team Swap Error Variations are the toughest of the 2018 Topps Gypsy Queen short print variants, landing 1:843 hobby packs. They’re also the most sneaky.
These cards play “What If?” by listing the player with the wrong team. The image isn’t changed. It’s simply the team name on the front at the top of the card.
2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Team Swap Error Variations have no additional parallels.
We’re still waiting to see exactly what these look like.
Bazooka Backs Are Parallels, Not Variations
Among the 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball variations were Gum Back SSP cards, but only for certain cards. 2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball has similar Bazooka Back cards, however, they are a full parallel set and not variations.
All 320 cards on the base set checklist, including the 20 high number short prints, have Bazooka Back cards. They’re relatively tough at 1:43 hobby packs for the first 300 cards. The final 20 are 1:1,263 packs.
This Mike Moustakas Isn’t a Variation Short Print
Mike Moustakas’ base card has him in one of the Jackie Robinson Day uniforms.
The number 42 is clearly visible. This isn’t appear to be a variation short print. Rather, it’s his regular card. The parallels don’t line up. For example, it has Indigo versions. These aren’t part of the variation mix.
The code on the back of the Moustakas card also matches base cards, not Jackie Robinson variations.
Neither Is This Justin Upton
It looks like a Capless Variation, doesn’t it? It’s not. This is Justin Upton’s regular base card.
Spotting 2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball Variations: The Code Method
So you think there’s a chance you’ve got one of the SSP 2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball variations but you’re not entirely sure. The code trick is in play. Flip the card over and focus in on the fine print at the bottom of the card. Specifically, look to the end of that fine print to a long and not very exciting looking string of text. Here are the code endings that matter when it comes to variation hunting:
• Base – 829
• Jackie Robinson Day Variations – 864
• Capless Variations – 867
• Team Swap Error Variations – 870
It’s important to note that these codes in the fine print aren’t meant to be used for spotting short prints. In fact, they’re not intended for collectors at all. Rather, it’s part of the production process. That said, they can be a handy tool for stuff like this. While you can use them for identifying other inserts, the regular card numbers and different designs are much, much easier in this regard. Think of the codes as a last resort or confirmation tool for variations.

I wish they would stop calling stuff like team swaps “error cards.” They are not errors if they done intentionally. Call them what they are, chase cards, or perhaps more accurately, money grabs.
Seems to be another parallel that has the team name missing. I pulled a Votto (217) and Lopez (205) that do not have team names. It would seem these are listed as “Missing Name Plates.”
@Broadus — Yes, those are Missing Nameplate parallels, which are outlined here: https://www.beckett.com/news/2018-topps-gypsy-queen-parallels/
Oh I see know, I found a few without team names…
Are all the 2018 Angel cards without California or Los Angeles??? I am wondering about this as I have Trout and Ohtani both with just Angels on the front!
@Joe — For the past few years all of their cards have simply said “Angels” for all sets. I believe I have heard this was at the request of MLB.
i just opened my first few packs of GQ and see card #32 of martin perez.perez is a lefty thrower but the card shows a right handed thrower, not perez.is this considered an error card or a non corrected error?
@paul — If it’s an error, all are that way. It won’t be corrected.
Verlander in a #42 Uniform But Team name is Tigers . Its normal I believe ? Seems all other sets have him already as Astro’s .
@jeffrey – All the Verlander variations have him in a Tigers uniform.
card #162,francisco mejia rc,shows him capless, but not listed as a capless variation.this is considered his base card?
@paul – All of the Mejia cards are like that. It’s not a variation.
I opened BOX WHICH CONTAINED A PACK WITH DIFFERENT PACKAGING..GOT A VICTOR ROBLES CARD WITH PINKISH TINT #254……IS THIS A PARALLEL, OR WHATEVER
PLMK
THANKS
JAKE
I got a box with 15 of the pink ones too, not seeing any info on them
Mike
@Mike – It looks like some eBay sellers are listing the Missing Blackplate parallels as Pink. They’re shown here: https://www.beckett.com/news/2018-topps-gypsy-queen-parallels/
