2012 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Baseball Details
The MLB Draft is complete, now we can have draft picks cards. Topps unveiled the basic information and preview images for 2012 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects on Friday, the latest installment of the annual staple that will have some of the first cards of the 2012 MLB Draft class.
New this year will be dual autographs pairing Top 10 picks from this year’s draft with notable top picks from the past, while there will be cards featuring the All-Star Futures Game members as well as Aflac and Under Armour All-American signatures, too.
There will be one Chrome autograph per 24-pack Hobby box and three in every 12-pack HTA Jumbo box. Notable rookies lined up to sign for this one already include Bryce Harper and Yu Darvish. Autographs will be found as standard Refractors and the following shades: Blue (/150), Gold (/50), Orange (/25), Purple (10), Red (/5) and 1/1 SuperFractors and printing plates. No players were announced on a preliminary autograph checklist other than those seen in the card mock-ups here.
The Draft Picks (prospects) portion of the product will include as many as 165 players on standard and Chrome cards. For Refractors, there will be Blue (/250), Gold, Orange, Red and 1/1 SuperFractors and plates. For standard cards, there will be Blue (/500), Orange (/250) and Red (1/1s) parallels as well as printing plates. New are a Silver Ice parallel and a Red Ice (/25) and a Purple Ice (/10) version, too.
The Rookies portion of the product will feature 55 players — all with the standard array of parallels expected in this one (same serial-numbering as prospects). Some of the players who will appear on Rookie Cards will be Harper, Darvish, Jesus Montero, Matt Moore, Jarrod Parker, Brett Lawrie, Drew Smyly, Yoenis Cespedes, Norichika Aoki and Will Middlebrooks.
The Bowman Black continuity autographs will continue here with 25 players — all cards numbered to 25 — with the aforementioned high school all-star autos also to be found. The Dual Top 10 Picks autos will be limited to just 25 or fewer copies. Players expected to appear there will include Ryan Braun, Bubba Starling, Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon for starters.
For Relics and insert cards in this one, there will be a heavy presence for the Futures Game as there was in some past Bowman Draft products. Collectors can expect to find Relics numbered to 199, jumbo patches limited to 25, 1/1 patch booklets and Logoman patches.
Bowman’s Best inserts will return here with a new design and 50 players in tow. While the standard cards will be found one in every six packs, there also will be die-cut Refractor parallels (/99), XFractors (/25) and Atomic Refractor (1/1) versions to find, too.
Wow! HTA is new for this year for BDPP, correct? Should be interesting. Wondering if the demand will match that of the Bowman HTA boxes/cases…
HTA is indeed new to BDP&P. While I do like this, it likely means no Chrome autos in Retail (as was the case with 2012 Bowman). What I’m REALLY digging is the 165 prospect base cards this year. Everyone, thank the new early July 13th signing deadline for this.
Assuming they all sign with their teams and with Topps, here are just some of the many names they can use, both on Chrome and as AFLAC/Under-Armour/Perfect Game inserts. Naturally I expect they’ll hold some of these back for 2013 Bowman.

Is there any info on the card that has a blank outline of a player in the batting pose? Is it like we have a chance to be on a bowman card? I didnt see any thing on that ,chris please help me on this one
i love bowman products, and usally get them buy the case, but this high school stuff, not the way to go, if they are any good they will have plenty of time later, in the minors, its the same in football. and i know not all will agree with me but wait till they make a commitment to the sport. i also wonder if topps collects a ton of theses autos and then saves them, for when or if theses players make it big saving them a lot of money in the future
@chris houser, I believe it is just showing the card design for the prospect autos… it’s not an actual card
HTA = easy profit for case flippers and BNB-level multi-case rippers
I’m a low budget collector. I’m very disappointed in Topps for discontinuing any autographs in retail packages. I hate going to the local hobby shop to buy a pack at $3 more than the retail and getting the same basic cards. I even see that the store has bought all the retail booster boxes from Target/Walmart and raised the prices $3 a box.
Looks like it will be a fine product but i have a hard time getting too excited about the bowman draft releases.i love the regular bowman release since its always full of decent rookies and prospects but by the time bowman draft comes out I’m usually burned out as I have already piled up my collection of rookies and prospects.Bowman draft just feels like i’m getting the same stuff that i invested in 6 months earlier but with the addition of even more obscure players that more than likely will never make it to the majors.There’s always the exceptions tho and i always like the way bowman looks and they are fun to collect with all of the parallels and autos.
Tired of Bowman..always seems like the same old stuff..and about 90% prospects who never make it
I do like the idea of Draft being hobby only this year, assuming it means that Topps won’t completely crank up the hobby presses as a result. Also curious to see if this is just a one-time thing, or if it will continue for future Bowman products.
For me, being a huge fan of the draft and the picks from it, I am super excited for this product! Last year, when I went to Target to buy packs, it was disappointing to see tons and tons of 2011 BDPP packs and blasters just laying around. You could probably go to Target now and see the same stuff. Glad they made it a hobby only product and the edition of the HTA Jumbo Box. Can’t Wait!!!
