The Card: 1991-92 Pro Set Platinum Hockey Fred Rogers #297

It was 50 years ago today that Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood made its national television debut. With that, television evolved, millions of childhoods were changed and imaginations triggered.

Fred Rogers’ on-screen persona was one that was soft spoken. At the same time, he had an uncanny way of showing unconditional love, explaining empathy and making sense of the world that kids inhabited. Mr. Rogers looked for the good in everything and empowered his viewers–young and adult–to do the same. At the same time, he was the good we strive to be.

He also showed how things were made.

The show ran on PBS through 2001 and aired more than 1,000 episodes if you include its run as a regional program before going national.

1991-92 Pro Set Platinum Hockey is a product that’s largely forgotten today, perhaps unfairly. It was Pro Set’s attempt at capturing the growing premium market. The cards were much more glossy and the full-bleed design emphasized photos. It was in many ways, Pro Set’s spin on Stadium Club.

Included at the end of the checklist are a dozen Celebrity Captains cards.

These feature fans from outside the hockey world and can be seen as something of an early precursor to the growing number of pop culture additions that would be added regularly to sports card sets about a decade later. Besides Rogers, other celebrities in the subset include Ralph Macchio of Karate Kid fame, Marv Albert, James Belushi and singer Burton Cummings.

Fred Rogers has appeared in a couple of other sets including a Presidential Medal of Freedom insert in 2009 Topps American Heritage Heroes and various parts of 2011 Topps American Pie.

So let’s make the most of this beautiful day…

Years ago I purchased a signed version of this card. Obviously not pack pulled, but still cool to me.
