1983 O-Pee-Chee Baseball is a typical release from the Canadian company made more notable by a couple of Hall of Fame Rookie cards and one of the most popular baseball card designs of the 1980s. It may not be as big as the Topps set that it’s based off of, but it has the majority of the most important parts.

1983 O-Pee-Chee Baseball Pack

1983 O-Pee-Chee Baseball Checklist Overview

Totalling 396 cards, the 1983 O-Pee-Chee Baseball checklist is exactly half the size of the year’s Topps set. However, when it comes to the key cards, O-Pee-Chee did get two-thirds of the 1983 RC trinity with cards of Tony Gwynn and Ryne Sandberg. The absence of Wade Boggs is noticeable but not enough to completely drag the release down. Willie McGee is the only other Rookie Card of note in the set. Missing from 1982, this is home to the first O-Pee-Chee Cal Ripken Jr. card.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos get a little extra attention compared to other teams, but that’s to be expected from a set put out by a Canadian company.

Like most O-Pee-Chee Baseball sets, the card stock is brighter than standard Topps cards. It’s more white to Topps’ grayish tone.

Although most of the checklist is regular player cards, there are a couple of subsets. All-Stars bring additional cards of top players from the era.

There’s also Super Veterans, a now-and-then style card that shows veterans from early in their careers alongside a then-current shot.

A Familiar Look

As far as design goes, the design piggybacks off of 1983 Topps Baseball. A couple of differences do make for easy spotting, though. Fronts have an O-Pee-Chee logo in place of their American cousin. Text is also bilingual with both English and French. This is most prominent in the write-ups on the back, but there’s also the position on the front.

Releasing later, several roster moves are noted on card fronts with a small “now with” note that’s not in Topps.

Condition can be tough, even for cards coming straight from packs. Centering can be all over the place. Rough edges are also common due to the wire cutting methods done north of the border.

1983 O-Pee-Chee Baseball isn’t a particularly scarce set. However, in comparison to Topps, there’s not nearly the same amount of cards.

I picked up the 1983 O-Pee-Chee set off of eBay a few years ago. There was a spell where the O-Pee-Chee sets were relatively cheap and I got as far back as 1982 without paying much more than $20. The price goes up significantly beyond 1982 though, for whatever reason. The O-Pee-Chee sets are always fun because of the “now with” update on cards of players that changed teams, a few of which are their only cards with that team because they didn’t last long there. The 1988 set also has a few #1 Draft Pick cards of Expos and Blue Jays that were exclusive to OPC and the 1992 set had a Gary Carter tribute exclusive. Quirky things like that are definitely one of the things missing from collecting nowadays, when it’s all about exploiting the next big rookie.
