Auston Matthews leads the 2016-17 Upper Deck Series One Young Guns roster

With an impressive four-goal debut, Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs made an instant impression with hockey card collectors. The demand for his first pack-inserted cards in an NHL uniform is expected to be strong and they are coming in 2016-17 Upper Deck Series One.

This season’s rookie class is deeper than just the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, though, and the always-popular Young Guns subset (found 1:4 hobby packs) has many other freshman performers that are expected to make an impact in the hobby over the coming months and years.

Among the highlights of the 50-card subset are rookie cards of highly-touted prospects like Lawson Crouse, Jakob Chychrun, Anthony Mantha, Ivan Provorov, Travis Konecny, Jimmy Vesey, Sebastian Aho, Jesse Puljujarvi, Zach Werenski, Nick Schmaltz, Pavel Buchnevich, Christian Dvorak, Mikhail Sergachev, Matthew Tkachuk, and William Nylander.

Collectors may be wondering why certain players were left off the checklist for Series One, but they will simply have to wait until 2016-17 Upper Deck Series Two is released to get their hands on regular Young Guns cards of Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine and Toronto’s Mitch Marner. There is some consolation, however, in the fact that they are part of the UD Canvas (1:24 packs) partial parallel set that is made up of 30 rookies in each series. The next release is expected to have a Canvas Young Guns card of Matthews.
