Allen and Ginter is known for covering the world beyond just a single sport. 2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball takes that theme even more to heart, with key components coming from ancient Rome and others based in a famous cornfield.

2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Header

For the most part though, this is the Allen and Ginter you expect: quirky, old-fashioned, odd and varied. Basically, you could say it’s intentionally all over the map.

Hobby boxes continue to promise three total hits coming from any combination of autographs, memorabilia cards, Rip cards or original Allen & Ginter cards.

2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball Base Set

2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball Base

How’s this for familiar? The 2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball base set has 350 cards, the final 50 of which are short prints. As in the past, short prints aren’t overly difficult to pull, landing every other pack.

Parallels come in different shapes and sizes. Standard-sized versions come in Glossy, which are one-of-ones and shouldn’t require you to check the box lids.

Mini parallels are included one per pack. In addition to the basic version that’s essentially a shrunken-down tobacco-sized version of the base card, there are Allen and Ginter Back (1:5 packs), Black (1:10), No Number, Brooklyn Back (/25), Wood (1/1) and Glossy (1/1).

Mini Metal cards are a partial parallel covering 100 cards from the checklist. Each is numbered to 3.

2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball has a pair of framed mini parallels. Printing Plates feature four different one-of-ones for each card. Cloth cards (/10) are available for 150 subjects.

Autographs

2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball Kevin Costner Autograph

Similar to the Rocky cards in 2015 Topps Allen and Ginter, a Kevin Costner autograph is done with Field of Dreams in mind. So while Costner’s signature is on the card, he’s listed as Ray Kinsella from the film. Costner also has autographs in 2016 Topps Archives Baseball only with Bull Durham instead.

Allen and Ginter Autographs are the traditional framed mini cards. Parallels for these come with Black Frames (/25) and Red Ink (/10). All told, 2016 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball has more than 100 different autograph signers, mixing baseball players with athletes from other sports and pop culture.

Book cards return and are numbered to 10. These have both a signature and a relic swatch.

Collectors can also find Cut Signatures (1/1) with a subject list that includes politicians and other figures from history.

Memorabilia Cards

2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball Relic

Basic memorabilia cards can be found with three different designs. Design A and Design B both have 60 cards and are regular-sized cards. Framed Mini Relics (50 cards) are done initially with a mini card style before being embedded in something full-sized.

Ancient Rome Relics use coins from a long, long time ago. These, along with Silver Coin parallels (1/1) are hobby exclusives. These have 24 different cards on the checklist.

Rip Cards

2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball Rip Card

The Rip card tradition continues as a case hit. These are full-sized cards that can be opened (and destroyed) to reveal another card.

These inner cards come in a few different forms. First up are 50 Mini Exclusives that expand the set to 400 cards. These have Metal (/3) and Wood (1/1) parallels.

Red Autographs (/10) return as do Artist’s Originals, cards that are done as mini paintings.

In addition to basic Rips, there are also Double Rip cards that have a pair of the exclusive minis.

Basic Inserts

2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball Laureates of Peace

2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball has basic inserts that come in both big and small. The Numbers Game is the most common, inserted every other pack. These look at the significance jersey numbers play to featured players.

Other full-sized inserts include Baseball Legends (25 cards) and Natural Wonders (20 cards).

On the smaller side, mini inserts combine at a rate of 1:5 packs. Ferocious Felines (15 cards) are all about cats. U.S. Mayors (35 cards) delves into civic politics with some of the most recognizable city leaders in the country. Subways and Streetcars (15 cards) highlight transportation. Finally, Laureates of Peace (ten cards) pay tribute to Nobel Peace Prize winners.

Box Loaders

Hobby boxes once again come with a box loader. While most are basic, over-sized inserts, some come with premium elements. These include Relics (/25), Autographs (/15), Autographed Relics (/5) and Cut Signatures (1/1).

Cabinet Relics come with huge swatches of memorabilia. In the past, these have included big parts of name plates from the backs of game-used jerseys. Not surprisingly, there’s only one of each card.

A week after 2016 Topps Allen and Ginter Baseball was released, Topps released Allen and Ginter X as an online-exclusive. The product is similar but cards are black like last year’s version.

Doesn’t it seem like A&G devotes an insert set to cats and natural wonders every single year? Maybe I am misremembering, but I remember at least a couple of each.

  2. Jonathan W. Iwanski 14 January, 2016 at 17:40

A&G are fun when I find an insert I want because usually I can’t get rid of them.

  3. BARRY 19 January, 2016 at 22:06

After ten years of A&G it is time for Topps to get some new blood on the product and get some new ideas. They have the worst artist making their sketch cards. They have no clues on what they make and their quality control sucks. It also seems that they use the same pictures for year to year and I’m tired of the same ole, same ole. In 2015 they didn’t have any veteran players and that made the product less desirable. I have no idea what they did in 2016. What they need to do is listen to the collector who buys their cards….Listen to the people who break their product and spend big dollars trying to make a few dollars.

  4. G.G. 20 January, 2016 at 19:44

I really like the look and feel of A&G. I like the pop culture integrated into the set. I agree “felines” and the same are a little over played; but overall I appreciate the product.

  5. Bill 12 July, 2016 at 21:09

Michele Steele and Rick Klein? Collecting ties or not, this checklist is extremely weak. Also disappointed that Topps didn’t include Vin Scully … that would have been special.

  6. Patrick 12 July, 2016 at 21:56

A&G is a fun product but it seems the same every year except the names have changed. I bought a bunch of 2013, a little 2014, and 0 2015. At 10 years they should have put this one to bed.

  7. Max 13 July, 2016 at 09:26

Can’t wait! Maybe the Ancient Rome stuff will make my wife a bit less cranky when I bring home a box!

  8. Tanner / Mouschi 16 July, 2016 at 12:15

Overall, I’m not sure what to think about this product, because it looks very similar to the previous releases. However, as you know … I’m ALWAYS looking for new Canseco cards! If anyone hits a rare one (or any rare Canseco), please contact me at tanmanbaseballfan@gmail.com – thank you!

  9. Boots 22 July, 2016 at 14:31

Just ripped a case and it was junk. This is by far my least favorite product out there today. The hits are so weak. Maybe its just me, but not a fan. In hindsight, i honestly would trade an allen and ginter case for retail boxes. Flat out junk.

i just pulled a Michael Phelps mini autographed card in blue ink. It was framed but it looks brown not black. Wonder how many Phelps auto cards there are out there. It’s a great readable auto. Anyone else seen one?

  15. Ben Dix 4 February, 2018 at 16:21

I have been looking on eBay and in the Beckett magazine for cards and the set that have a glossy back that are NOT numbered #’d1/1. I found a handful of them in about 5000 cards that I ripped and have yet to see anything about it anywhere. Does anybody know about these rare cards ???
