2015 Topps Baseball Wrappers Metal Signs 1970s

By Ryan Cracknell | Hobby Editor

Baseball card and trading card wrappers have a colorful history. It’s often connected to times of tearing or carefully unfolding a wax paper rectangle, depending on your pack-opening method. A series of online-exclusive metal cards are putting a different spin on wrappers and pop art.

Topps has released four sets of classic wrappers through their website that take the artwork and put them on metal cards. Three sets are dedicated to baseball while Star Wars also gets one.

The baseball wrapper sets are divided into three separate series based on decade. The 1950s, 1960s and 1970s are all included. The 1950s set covers wrappers from 1952 to 1959. The cost of each set on the Topps website is $74.99 and they’re hand-numbered to 99 copies.

In 2014, Topps revisited these wrapper designs with over-sized metal signs. These are different in that they’re the dimensions of traditional cards measuring 2.5″ by 3.5″. The wrapper metal cards are printed on aluminum.

The metal cards for the Star Wars wrappers take a similar approach in that they’re also traditional card-sized, done on aluminum and limited to 99 sets.

This set costs $99.99, though as it covers all the different series and wrapper cover variations from the original trilogy. Five series from Star Wars: A New Hope are covered as are three from The Empire Strikes Back and two for Return of the Jedi. The final film in the original trilogy has a few different wrapper designs for both Series 1 and Series 2. All told, the Star Wars set has 15 cards.
