Topps Addresses the Missing 2022 Topps Chrome Extended Short Prints – Updated
When the 2022 Topps Chrome Baseball checklist was released, there were five additional short prints at the end of the base set. Because the 2022 Topps Chrome Extended Base Short Prints weren’t listed on the original info for the set, little was known about them or how often they would land in packs.
It didn’t take long for collectors and breakers to realize that it wasn’t often. It turns out it was even less than that. They weren’t in any hobby or jumbo packs at all. Topps has since confirmed that they aren’t in retail packs, either.
Topps released a statement on social media addressing the High Numbers. In it they state that there was a miscommunication at the manufacturing level. Because they were late additions to the product, something happened and they weren’t included in most pack types. The only ones that do have them in packs are Hobby LITE, which were exclusive to the Topps website. The five Extended Base Short Prints will also be live in Sonic and Logofractor editions. Topps did not offer further details on these two pack types.
However, that doesn’t mean that the end of the 2022 Topps Chrome High Number Short Prints. Topps has announced that they’re creating special four-card silver packs that will have the missing cards.
2022 Topps Chrome Baseball Silver Packs will begin shipping on September 30.
What’s In the 2022 Topps Chrome Baseball Silver Packs
The five short prints, which include Julio Rodriguez and Bobby Witt Jr., will be randomly inserted in the special Silver Packs. Topps has not said how frequently they land. The Extended Base Set cards are not in every pack.
The remaining cards will be a mix of 2022 Topps Chrome base cards and inserts. According to the card maker, there will also be other surprises.
2022 Topps Chrome Baseball Silver Packs Distribution
Topps will send out one pack for each hobby and hobby jumbo box that was purchased through their site. Hobby LITE are not eligible. Blaster/value boxes purchased directly from Topps are eligible for a draw they’re doing for all retail.
Topps is also working with distributors and breakers to help get the new packs to collectors who bought boxes through them at the same rate. Many dealers and breakers have already made announcements on their sites and social media that they’ll do what they can to get their customers the packs. For those who are unsure, contacting the store where the box was purchased is the easiest way.
There’s a page on Topps’ website that has full 2022 Topps Chrome Baseball Silver Pack info.
Retail Draw
Retail blaster/value boxes and mega boxes bought at places like Target and Walmart do not automatically qualify for Silver Packs. Instead, collectors can enter a draw.
Topps will do four monthly draws, one per month in October, November, December and January. Only retail boxes purchased during the specified timeframe are eligible for that month’s draw. The dates for each draw:
- October 11 (retail boxes purchased through October 10)
- November 9 (boxes purchased between October 11 and November 8)
- December 13 (boxes purchased between November 9 and December 12)
- January 10 (boxes purchased between December 13 and January 9)
To enter collectors must email the following info to chromeretailvariations@topps.com:
- First and last name
- Mailing address
- An image of the proof of purchase/receipt made by the customer. The receipt has to show the purchase date.
- Date of the purchase
Full details on the retail draw are on the Topps website.
Once again, more garbage quality control by the fine people at Topps. Someone remind me again why a monopoly is a good thing for the baseball card business? Fleer, Donruss, Upper Deck, Score, Pacific. None of those companies were perfect by any means, but at least they offered another choice for consumers unwilling to put up with shoddy work. Something has to give.
