One fan could win $1 million in Topps giveaway

The chase for $1 million begins next year for card collectors.
Topps announced its digital component for 2013 Topps Baseball and a lucky winner could get the grand prize.
Collectors will unlock players at the Million Dollar Chase website by redeeming codes found in 2013 Topps Baseball Series 1.
To play, each day pick a player from your list you think will get a hit in a game that day.
The first person to beat Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak will win $1 million.
Participants will win prizes throughout the event as they rack up hit streaks. Prizes include autographed and coin cards. Season-long winners could win autographed memorabilia.
Topps has used digital games with its flagship product for several years now. Collectors have been able to get vintage cards and exclusive die cuts.
This version is similar to its football game this year, NFL Game Time, where collectors unlocked teams and picked five to use that week. Collectors would get points based on the amount of points a team scored, but tokens could be used just once.

Didn’t MLB already do this exact contest last year? It’s a shame Topps did such a great promotion with the vintage cards in 2010 and 2011. 2012 was a complete bust as you rarely got a card and the prizes just weren’t as interesting. I probably shouldn’t just immediately bash the promotion before even one code is entered, but this sure seems like a big pain. The trouble with the MLB version was having to remember to constantly go in and pick players. At least there you could pick any MLB player. With this being from our “list” it sounds impossible. I’d rather them take the million and split it up into 10,000 cool $100 prizes or take the million and buy more vintage cards.
Jeff: The odds of that one contest being one are not low. Breaking into countless smaller ones = better odds of winning, which means higher payouts.
Jeff, they aren’t really giving away a million of their own money. The likely took out an insurance policy in the unlikely event someone actually wins. Cost certainty and all that good stuff.
Interesting concept, but I bet it will be won by someone within the first 70 games or so.
At first I thought it was going to have to be an individual player having the streak, which
is likely impossible as no one ever seems to get that lucky/consistent anymore.
Not even when Chipper Jones was batting .400 for the first half of the season a little while back.
Q: If there is a double-header that day and the player hits in only one of those games, does it still count?
Q: If the game is rained out, is it an automatic loss?
this is similar to MLB.com’s or ESPN’s Beat The Streak game they do every year except it’s not free since you have to spend money on Topps products in order to get code cards of players.
Not a huge fan of the NFL or the MLB one for next year. Basically it’s whoever buys more product has better odds of winning because obviously they will have more coins/team/players to play each time around and the more you have the better the chances are you’ll have the better teams/players.
MLB has been doing this same contest on their website for several years now. It was a lot of fun, but with the Topps version being that you have to unlock players to use them means that you are going to need at least 57 codes to win. I sure hope the codes are more readily available than the contest code cards in the past few years.
Unlike many of you I like the Golden Giveaway. I preferred Million Card and Diamond, but I don’t mind Golden. However, I CAN’T STAND the Game Time Giveaway. The site is clunky, the picking of teams to win that day is tedious and you have to buy tons of codes to keep picking because you can only use each token once. I really hope that the Million Dollar Giveaway is better than Game Time because Game Time is awful.
No one will win this one. Just another gimmick to make people buy cards on a hope and a prayer. MLB has been running the contest for years and i think no one has even gotten close. It gets even harder when you have to have a player unlocked and there might only be 8 teams playing in a day. At least in MLB’s game you could choose anyone on any given day. I’m sure some people will have fun with it, trying to win the prizes along the way, but no one will win the million.
I can deal with gametime, but I agree they need to fix the website.
It’s hard to know where you really are placing. I mean, there are 10 winners every week but they
only list the top 5. How stupid.
They should list the top 20 (or more) so you have a real idea how you are doing.
Right now you can be a “winner” and if you are not in the top 5 you would never know.
I’m likely “doomed” for the season due to some really bad showings, but I’d still like to know if
there is a possibility for say 10th place. :-)
At least this week I did not have any of the terrible showings and the leader boards don’t show
repeats in the weekly winners so, who knows?
