First look: 2013 Topps Major League Soccer

As soccer grows in the United States, card companies are looking to tap into the market.
Topps has secured a licensed with Major League Soccer and will produce its first MLS cards this summer.
Each hobby box will have 24 packs with 10 cards in each pack. In addition, there will be two autographs and three relic cards in every box.
Autographs will include players from the MLS SuperDraft and top stars from the league on cards called MLS Maestros Autographs. Each autograph will feature four different parallels, including a Golazo parallel numbered 1-of-1.
Other autographs include Golden Boot Die-Cut Autographs with current and former goal scorers.
In addition, the set will include Extra Time Redemptions for transfers who make their debut during the 2013 season.
Some relic cards will also bear signatures with different levels of parallels.
Topps will also feature MLS Kit Relics and Official MLS Soccer Ball Redemption Cards.
The inserts will utilize action shots and unique designs.

The base set will feature 200 cards including short-prints and variations. There will be Blue (numbered to 50), Gold (/25), Black (/10), Golazo (1-of-1) and Printing Plate parallels.
The set is scheduled to come out in mid-July.
Update: Topps announced today is has formed multi-year partnership with the MLS. Future products include trading cards, sticker, sticker albums and other MLS collectables.
“MLS is excited about this new partnership with Topps,” said Maribeth Towers, MLS senior vice president of consumer products. “We regularly hear from MLS supporters that they want a variety of cards and collectibles and this new relationship will allow us to super-serve our incredibly supportive fans.”

** CHECKLIST SUBJECT TO CHANGE **
I am really interested to see what Topps does with the MLS cards. The MLS set is one I look froward to collecting every year.
This set looks AMAZING I cant wait to collect all the cards!!!!!!
1) The base cards look like crap. SRSLY, this is the best they could come up with? A big, broad, stripe on the side of the card? REALLY? This looks like an 8th Grade computer class project gone horribly wrong. What so wrong with taking the design of the baseball flagship (which was actually pretty decent) and modifying it for football?
2) Is there a law that I’m not aware of that mandates that EVERY. SINGLE. TOPPS. RELEASE. is required to have A) minis and B) a “Throwback” insert set? (OBTW, the “English Premiere League” didn’t exist in 1978. Way to go! Maybe you should brush-up on your football history before you go out and get the license.) Time for some new ideas, fellas!
3) The product development team that assembled this must REALLY, REALLY, like Sporting. SKC is a good side, but five autographs in a 13-card Maestros set good? Umm, no.
4) I know Landon Donovan is still UD-exclusive, but would it have killed Topps to get some of the other DPs to sign? Were Cahill, Henry, Wondo, Keane, Sharlie, di Viao, et al unable to return their calls? How about veterans like Saborio, Cudicini, and Beckerman, or young stars like Omar Gonzalez, Jose Villareal, and Jack McInerney — I’m mean, he’s ONLY leading MLS in goals scored!
5) Speaking of autographs, 2013 Topps Five Star Baseball will have an autograph of Pele, but 2013 Topps MLS Soccer will not. THIS WAS THE PRODUCT IN WHICH TO UNLEASH THE PELE!
6) And it wouldn’t be a Topps product without a crapload of gimmicked short-prints (unannounced, of course) and unnecessary parallels, wouldn’t it? That’s the Topps we all know and love. I guess completely ruining the fun and collectiblity of one sport’s trading cards just wasn’t enough for them, huh?
With that said, I still support MLS and my club (Philly ’till I die), but just like with their baseball products I can not in good conscience collect Topps MLS.
I keep telling myself I need to find a soccer player to collect, there’s some nice looking cards in the soccer market
To respond to Sr. Killjoy…I mean Stale Gum, while the EPL as we know it today did not exist in 1978, Topps has been making European Football cards for a very long time, and yes, they made cards in 1978. Hence the use of that design. Perhaps you’d have wanted them to use the 1978 Baseball or Football design or how about Hockey? Would you have preferred to have Topps call them “Footballers”??!
Besides, you want them to have new ideas? For “soccer” these are new ideas. For all we know, they are a hit in Europe. Just because you don’t like what they’re doing doesn’t mean that somebody else won’t. There is somebody out there right now who can’t wait to get their hands on this product just as much as you can’t stand it.
I don’t collect Soccer cards. But now that Topps has the license, I will not only celebrate, but I will probably get a pack or two for kicks. Now if only Topps can get back the NBA and NHL licenses, all will be right in the Hobby world.

Great to see Ashtone Morgan (at last!!) included in the MLS card set. Well done Topps. Morgan was Canadian U-20 Player of the Year in 2011 & should have been featured in 2011 & 2012 sets (big miss from previous MLS sets)….
HOPEFULLY Topps can tweak the checklist and get 2012 Canadian U-20 Player of the Year Doneil Henry RC in the set, too….. heck, the kid was given a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, I think he deserves an RC. Only 20yo, he bypassed the MLS SuperDraft and was signed direct by Toronto FC.
Pity to see Upperdeck not out with MLS. If Upperdeck not producing, MLS should have given Lic to someone else that knows how to produce quality Soccer cards like Futera. Hope Topps does not bring out the kiddies cards that we see in Europe.

Your comment #2 & 6 were pretty funny! As for comments #4 & 5, those were a little harsh, and possibly unfair. We don’t know the rules the league lays down for inclusion and the autographs they can access. For six years, Upper Deck never had Beckham. To expect Topps to get top guys like in their first product, is not fair.
Why would the MLS even want Pele in their set? That does not help the current league and its players. This is a growing league. They need to highlight their guys, not the past right now.
I’m looking forward to this. It looks good as laid out. But as you said in #6, that could ruin a good thing.
And finally, what is the retail box price?
Fascinating. I guess Upper Deck is truly evaporating (foregoing a 2013 set, which would have been there 10th consecutive year producing it, and 13th overall.) How many ‘legs’ does Upper Deck have left to stand on?
Anyhooo, … Thank You Topps for grabbing the reigns! They could make them out of old-fashioned cardboard, so long as I get to retain this sneaky-feeling that MLS cards are going to be around quite a bit (years) longer, (at least long enough for other American sports fans to catch up to my personal fanaticism for the sport).
CO: I don’t think #4 7 #5 are unfair comments. This is a very, VERY, weak AU checklist — and Topps is promising TWO AUs per waxbox. If Topps can get Hank Aaron, Koufax, Pujols, et al to sign for baseball, they ought to be able to get Henry, Keane, and yes Pele, to sign for soccer. At least, they would if they want to be taken seriously in soccer. (And OBTW, Becks did sign for UD in 2007)
But even beyond the DP-level players, where are the former USMNTers? How about AUs of the Pablo Mastroeni’s, Chris Albright’s, or Brian Ching’s? Where are the young stars like Jack McBean, Amobi Okugo, and Robert Earnshaw? How about MLS legends AUs like Marco Etcheverry, Brian McBride, and El Pibe?
And why are there so many Sporting players? Did Topps get the “sign four SKCers get Jimmy Nielsen to sign for free” discount?
Basically, Topps is taking the same formula that has worked oh-so-well in baseball, and porting it over into soccer. And just like with their baseball cards, I’ll be keeping my money.

Slight difference in production volume to get big names into baseball … much-lower production run on this one, which makes the more-expensive autos more painful.
It doesn’t say that this is an exclusive license, so I think it’s jumping the gun to say that UD is out for 2013. Time will tell though. Personally, I think UD makes great soccer sets and I don’t like the looks of the Topps stuff thus far.
I know we aren’t the best team, but no Whitecaps autos or relics? Y.P. Lee, Kobayashi or Kenny Miller would be awesome autographs.

RUSSELL TEIBERT! ok, what a terrific goal Saturday night – terrific month for the Vancouver Whitecaps 20yo in League (MLS) and Cup (Championship) play. He should have been included in 2011 Upper Deck or 2012 Upper Deck…. so hopefully 2013 Topps :)
Past MLS sets usually omitted academy kids (Homegrown Player Rule) who bypassed the draft (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homegrown_Player_Rule_(Major_League_Soccer) for full list). In a RC-hungry marketplace, this is unbelievable.
KEY rookie cards that should be in 2013 Topps inc. Russell Teibert (Whitecaps, 2x Canadian U-17 Player of the Year), Doneil Henry (Toronto FC, 2012 Canadian U-20 Player of the Year), Shane O’Neill (Colorado), Caleb Clarke (Vancouver Whitecaps) and Karl Ouimette (Impact Montreal).
Also, watch out for Will Trapp (Columbus Crew), Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Michael Seaton (DC United), Bryce Alderson (Vancouver Whitecaps), GK Richard Sanchez (FC Dallas), GK Quillan Roberts (Toronto FC) and GK Maxime Crepeau (Impact Montreal). These guys have not yet played, but are active with their respective teams (and all 20yo or younger – players that were too valuable to be allowed to enter the draft….).
Fortunately, 19yo DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle), 18yo Jack McBean (Galaxy) and 19yo Jose Villarreal (Galaxy) are included on the preliminary checklist – so these should be key RCs in 2013 Topps MLS.
PS – As a write this, my man Russell Teibert scores his 2nd goal of the night for Whitecaps FC – what a month for this kid!
Olds: I’m pretty sure it won’t take Pujols, Koufax, or Aaron money to get Keane, Cahill, et al to sign.
Scott: I’m not sure if HGPers or Academy players are members of the MLSPU, and can be included in a licensed card set. I think, and I could be wrong, that they actually have to play in a League match in order to be included on a card.
You are comparing active players, in mid season, to retired players? Sorry, that is not apples to apples.
And, Beckham DID NOT have an MLS autograph by Upper Deck. Not in 2007, not ever.
Do not expect Soccer cards of value from Topps. Check out EBay completed sales of soccer cards, by highest price. The first page is Upper deck and Futera. The Topps cards over here plummet in value after release – does not look good for MLS with Topps.
Do not expect MLS soccer cards issued by Topps to command or hold value. Over here in Europe they plummet in value after release – check out EBay soccer completed sales, first page not even 1 Topps card, all Upper deck and Futera. If Topps can’t get it right after 20 years of soccer in Europe, with the biggest stars in the world, I don’t like their chances with MLS.

Prices are dropping rather quick for a new release, for example, Glen Johnson Jersey card just sold on EBay for 99 cents and 1 of 1 cards can be got for around $10. Think best to hold off for the box dump.

They probably will, if they are still making soccer cards next year. I think Calen good enough for a card. Prices out there on the tables (and Ebay) for Topps soccer just goes from bad to worse:
