2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball marks the return of the prospecting brand after a one-year absence. The set is exclusive to Walmart. Sticking with past incarnations, there’s plenty of color in the form of parallels. Autographs are also a big focus.

Base Set

The 2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball base set has 100 cards. While veterans make up the majority of the presence, there are more than 30 rookies including Corey Seager, Trevor Story and Julio Urias.

2016 Bowman Platinum Base Corey Seager

The entire set has a handful of color-based parallels: Ice (value boxes only), Purple (/250), Green (/99), Orange (/25), Printing Plates and Black (1/1).

Autographs

Like all Bowman products, autographs play a key role in 2016 Bowman Platinum Baseball. In particular, it’s the Top Prospect Autographs. The checklist has more than 40 signers including Alex Bregman, Yoan Moncada and Dansby Swanson. Top Prospect Autographs have four levels of parallels: Purple (/150), Green (/99), Orange (/25) and Black (1/1).

2016 Bowman Platinum Top Prospect Autographs Orange Yoan Moncada

Veteran and Rookie Autographs highlight more than 20 players who have been in the majors since early in the season. In addition to base versions, there are Green (/99), Orange (/25) and Black (1/1) parallels.

Platinum Cut Autographs aren’t cut signatures. They get their name for their shape. They’re die-cut in the shape of a gem. Among the tougher autographs in the product, the only parallels are Orange (/5) and Black (1/1).

Inserts

Although the 2016 Bowman Platinum checklist has its base set, the Top Prospects portion will be seen as something similar for a lot of collectors. It is a prospecting product, after all. With 109 cards, the Top Prospects portion is actually bigger than the base set. Among these is a handful of short prints that make putting a full set together tougher. Parallels are similar to the base set with Purple (/250), Green (/99), Orange (/25), Printing Plates, Black (1/1) and value box-exclusive Ice.

Rookies are the focus of Bowman Next Generation. The inserts dig a little deeper with a separate Bowman Next Generation Prospects list. These inserts are designed to go together as pairs highlight a top young player and prospect for each franchise. Parallels carry over here as well with Purple (/250), Green (/99), Orange (/25) and Black (1/1).

Happy to see the product back, assuming they have not changed the formula too much. If they stopped doing on card autographs for the prospects then they will have completely lost me and I’ve worked on every set prior (though I’m missing a few cards that were/are too pricey for my liking).

  2. Kerry 17 August, 2016 at 12:28

I really, really, really (yes, really) hope that it is not an online product as I was saving my money for a box break of a chrome or platinum product other than the copy-cat versions of Topps Chrome or Bowman Chrome. I thought I would be opening Elite Extra Edition but I have liked this product in past years.

  3. Patrick 19 August, 2016 at 18:53

This stinks. The Wal-Marts in my area have stopped selling sports cards(Target still does). So I guess I will have to hope one of the distributors gets the leftovers…in a year.

  4. Richard 22 August, 2016 at 12:10

Well, Topps just saved me a heck of a lot money.
As soon as they get into the store someone will buy
it out to sell on Ebay and given the odds the boxes might get searched I’ll have to pass.

Given the picture of the prospect is a sticker auto it means they completely ignored the point of the product which was hard signed early autographs.

  5. larrjarr 24 August, 2016 at 21:41

So i read this on August 21st rite? I made plans on the release day Aug 24th to visit my Area Wal-Marts to pick up some of this product. I traveled all day August 24th and NONE of my Area Wal-Marts have this on the shelves. I asked several managers for info on when i could actually expect it to be in stock and NONE of the managers had any idea what i was talking about. Many managers referred to the Vendors and told me they would probably be stocking it. So bottom line . BAD information on Topps part and Terrible communication on the Wal Mart end between the management and corporate. You would think they would at least have information on the release of the so called EXCLUSIVE release date. Wasted time on a product that should be available in my opinion Everywhere. Long story short . Lesson learned… I’m done with this product before it even hits the shelves. Wasted time and disappointed collector…

    • Ryan Cracknell 24 August, 2016 at 22:10

Retail stuff can arrive at different times as they’re usually handled by someone outside of the Walmart, Target or wherever. From what I understand, it’s up to the vendors to get the stock to the stores. That means some areas get retail sooner, some get it later and some may never see it. Not sure what the case is here. Possible Topps used today so that some places don’t have it “early” as that leads to complaints too.

  6. Bob 26 August, 2016 at 09:49

Rumor has it the only place they have been found so far is at Meijer – Not Wal-mart. I’ve seen pics of 5 blasters online and heard reports of a few fat packs on the shelves but no one has reported even so much as seeing the $70 Collector’s Boxes.

But like I said, the buyers said they bought them at Meijer. From what I understand there has not been 1 single reported sighting at any Wal-Mart across the country so far. (well, reported anyways….)

  7. Dennis Birge 29 August, 2016 at 11:52

I’ve seen blasters and fat packs at Walmart here in Illinois but no collector’s boxes so far. Is there a photo guide on the prospect sp’s yet?

    • Ryan Cracknell 29 August, 2016 at 12:06

From what I understand, the SPs are just short prints, not variations. Willson Contreras might be the only exception as he was on the list twice. SPs are noted on the checklist here.

  8. Homer Brian 30 August, 2016 at 12:36

Haven’t seen any in Oklahoma City bought up the last of the Topps Chrome they had (few boxes and 2 packs)

  9. Bruce 1 September, 2016 at 20:58

Found 2 blasters at my local wal mart. Found 2 more at another wal mart. Left 4 other blasters on shelf. They also had them in packs. These were Ohio wal marts.

  10. Edwin Conrad 3 September, 2016 at 20:08

I found 3 o the collector boxes at the Local Wal Mart here in St. Joseph, MO

I bought 2 boxes and my friend bought the other. The collector boxes seem to each have 2 autos which the box states on it and one SP. The autos seem to be one base auto and one parallel per box. Also all 3 boxes had 2 numbered parallels not including the numbered auto.

  11. chris 3 September, 2016 at 23:05

Scoured six Walmarts within 10 miles in all directions and found three sealed boxes and two opened boxes. There were lots of blasters and rack packs, which I shunned. By the way, I noticed that in each 20-pack box, one of the two autographs was a color parallel. And each box also contained three or four colored non autographed cards. Seems like a steal for a 69.99 box. If I find any more, it’s flippin’ time. Oh, and as a final note, the Moncadas are very difficult. In the three boxes, only one surfaced, and I sold it, unfortunately, before I decided to build a set.

  12. Steve 12 September, 2016 at 15:51

Found a box at a local Walmart here in Indiana. Pulled a Mike Trout Autograph….figured pretty good considering I haven’t seen any for sale on EBay….or it’s worthless lol

  13. Gene Hite 29 September, 2016 at 21:37

The Kolby Allied is an error card. I have both the prospect an autograph prospect. It has him as drafted 13th but he was 14th. Found that out when I pulled Garrett Whitley Autograph. It both cards show both were drafted 13th

  14. Evan 8 November, 2016 at 16:56

I just pulled the j.p. Crawford sp. Is there a forum I can go to to post the picture? This is the closest Bowman Platinum topic I have founded. Also, how much is the j.p. Crawford sp worth?

  15. Joe Powers 25 November, 2016 at 13:40

Found two 20 count boxes in my local walmart and a few jumbo racks. they were all at the same walmart, I checked about four other ones no luck. did pull a Corey Seager orange 23/25.
