Kickers don’t really get a lot of attention in football – usually only when they miss one does anyone seem to notice.

But one of the most memorable plays from the first Sunday of the 2012 NFL season came from David Akers. The San Francisco 49ers kicker nailed a 63-yard field goal to tie the NFL record for longest kick with Tom Dempsey, Jason Elam and Sebastian Janikowski.

Akers didn’t seem to think he was going to make it. His mouth dropped after the ball hit the cross bar and bounced over to get his team the three points.

There has been long running joke that kickers don’t get much respect (Adam Sandler even did a song about it).

The same sentiment could be held true on cardboard as well. Akers has made his way into a number of sets over the years. He has 84 cards, including 10 memorabilia cards and four Rookie Cards. But no autographs.

His best Rookie Card – 2001 NFL Showdown First and Goal – has a high-book value of 60 cents. Not much at all.

But in this case, it’s not about the card. Akers’ reaction to hitting that kick was priceless.
