Beckett Sports Card Hot / Cold – March 18, 2024
Welcome to another installment of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take quick and fun look at what’s and what’s not in the worlds of sports and sports cards. It’s also where we say good-bye to winter and look ahead to bunnies, brackets and baseball.
The Madness is upon us. College basketball is about to embark on introducing the world to some new Cinderellas and Cinderfellas. It also means peak crumpled up paper thrown across the room season as brackets are busted game by game. Typically, the NCAA tournaments haven’t made an immediate impact on the hobby. But that’s changing. With the introduction of NIL and expanded collegiate card offerings, it’s shifting more to the mainstream as collectors prospect on the future and chase what’s out there for some of the most relevant names in sports.
With her points records and WNBA draft declaration still fresh and a realistic run at an NCAA title, Caitlin Clark remains one of the biggest names in collecting at the moment. She’s been a transcendent star already and things are only just beginning. Her first cards came out last year, but there have been some recent releases like 2023-24 Bowman Best University Basketball that has more autographs and other tough inserts.
Also on the court, Victor Wembanyama continues to light things up. On Sunday he became the first player ever to drop 30 points, pull down 15+ boards, make 5+ assists all the while shooting better than 50 percent from the field in a game. And while they’re still worst in the West, Wemby and the Spurs are starting to win with more regularity.
Love this but think it would be better if you expanded this list. Obviously there are much more hot and cold cards out there! Thank you
