2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Variations Guide
The 2020 Topps Update Series Baseball variations wrap up a season flagship short prints. Like Series 1 and Series 2, they’re available in two levels. SP variations are the ones that show up somewhat regularly. 2020 Topps Update Series SSP variations are much tougher and to the point where it could take multiple cases to find one.
In both cases, the premise is the same. Variations look like base cards at first glance but have a different photo.
Besides the photo, some cards have subtle other differences on the front. Notably, it’s to do with the subsets. Many of the base cards fall under things like All-Stars and Rookie Debut. Base versions have special logos and banners while variations, where applicable, do not.
The Return of the SSSP
On top of the short prints and super short prints, there are some SSSP variations in 2020 Topps Update Series Baseball. These are likely the toughest of all to pull. How tough? No odds were given.
Among the 2020 Topps Update Series SSSP cards are a couple of high-profile MLB owners, Magic Johnson and Derek Jeter. For some, seeing a Jeter card with a Marlins logo may be strange. After thousands of Yankees cards, it is.
Odds of Finding a Variation

SP Variations:
- Hobby – 1:63 packs
- Hobby Jumbo – 1:20 packs
- Blaster – 1:63 packs
- Hanger Box – 1:14 boxes

Confirming 2020 Topps Update Series Variations with the Codes on the Back
If you’re not sure if you have an SP or SSP card and don’t have all the images handy (or committed to memory), you can use the back for easy reference — although you may need some glasses.
The fine print at the bottom is usually not important. There’s plenty of legal stuff and copyright notes. At the end is a code intended for things on the production side. Although not the intention, they do help identify different types of cards — like variations. To do this, head straight to the end of the fine print. Then go to the final three digits. These are what you need for telling a variation from a base card:
- Base – 588
- SP Variation – 631
- SSP Variation – 632
- SSSP Variation – 633

Boy, I remember when I was able to buy cards. That was fun, opening packs and boxes and what not.
@Randy – Well, considering this isn’t even officially be out until tomorrow your chances of finding it would be hard. Looking at the odds, there is no shortage of Update.
I pulled the Luis Robert ssp. Couldn’t believe it. I don’t know why it’s not on this list
Babe Ruth SSP isn’t on the list either.
I hope I actually get to see some in a store and not just on secondary market
I just opened a 2020 hangar box and came across an Ichiro card that ends with #’s 633. The only info I can find on it is that it’s a SSSP but I’ve only found a couple other pictures online. It has him in shorts and a tee shirt and under his name it says Special Assistant to the Mariners. If anyone can help me out on how many were produced that would be greatly appreciated.
@Jason – They’re very tough but print runs and odds for the SSSPs haven’t been announced.
I pulled a Gavin Lux SSP that’s not on the list (it shows the back of his jersey and number on back ends in 632).
Pulled the Trent Grisham SP.
Hi I just bought bought some topps 2020 baseball update series and i want to know what topps was thinking and would do a stupid thing on the back of the cards the cards dont all go the same way when flipped why would they do that it’s really annoying when u what to look at the back of card and its upside down
Hey. My name’s Brent and I just wanted to update the collection of your missing set for base variation. U-9 = Ken Griffey Jr. , U-110= Mark McGwire, U-140= Clayton Kershaw, U-142= Albert Pujols, U-230= Cal Ripken Jr. (1991 Home Run Derby, U-249= Aroldis Chapman. Again, this is just to fill in the blanks for the base set…nothing fancy.
Hi. Will any of these cards be valuable. Or just for fun?
I have a 2020 Topps Update of Mitch Moreland, card number U-181, and right below the card number there’s stamped 0515/2020. Can someone tell me what that means? Thanks
@Ronald – It sounds like it’s a Gold parallel.
I have a Josh Taylor #25 card that is stamped 095/300. what is the significance? Thanks.
@Matt – It sounds like an Advanced Stats parallel.
So any number over /2020 is a gold parallel?
@Mario – Gold parallels have a gold border and have a serial number to 2020 copies (ie 1234/2020)
Just pulled u 52 Mr ruth himself ,black and white with name in color whats the odds for it
@Charlie – Depends on the pack type. The odds are in this article in the section titled “Odds of Finding a Variation”
I have been looking for a 2020 Topps Update variation on the border color and have not been able to find this. They are all the 1588 but have the blue on the side rather than the grey. Any help is appreciated
