Beckett 20 Questions: Retro Sets and Vintage Cards
When you click on links to various merchants on this site, like eBay, and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission.
A new year is nearly here, meaning we’ll get a fresh start at new cardboard soon — or you can continue to revisit the past if that’s your thing.
With plenty of popular retro brands, there are plenty of new options to revisit the old, and we want to ring in the new year with 20 Questions on both pieces of this collecting puzzle.

With less variety, I like the older sets better. A player could have less than 10 RCs 30 years ago. Heck, 40 years ago a player could have a couple years’ Big League experience before his first card hit the drugstore. Now? The sky’s the limit as far as how many RCs a player gets, as determined by card companies and those defining “RC”. The old cards don’t change; they just get older and more valuable. There are plenty of players on the field today whose RCs cost a pretty penny when they first hit the stage. Today, some of those cards are worth a pittance of what people paid for them 5-10 years ago.
Fun little survey. I must say though, there is more to the hobby than baseball, and, as a basketball and NASCAR collector, some of the questions I just clicked the names I recognized more than basing it on any actual knowledge of baseball or it’s players.
I hope to see a Beckett Cover in 2015- preferably Spring-that shows Reggie Jackson and Chris Olds in a photograph together- probably after sharing coffee and pleasantries in last years National.
man there were some tough decisions there. a few of them i was a draw on. more 20 questions is a plus
Billy: This was an item written for the results to appear in the next Beckett Baseball mag. You’ll see different 20 Questions approaches when it’s time to do one for Beckett Sports Card Monthly.
I like the idea of memorabilia cards, I just have lost faith they are real.
Ever since they started printed COAs on the card that basically guarantee NOTHING it makes
me think they are manufactured more often than not, so I no longer buy them for vintage players
and I really only consider it a factor for a RC or the like knowing they are not game used, just event used.
If a company can’t/won’t stand behind their material, I see no reason to trust they have any connection
to the players pictured on the cards. I know I’m far from the only one to think this since I see old school
material cards selling for more even if they might not be as attractive.
Can you do a questionare about things we want to get rid of or change in 2015. Or what quantity of product or autos is too much question?
No need … you can just tell the world here.
Chris: Great questions and fun. Keep this coming for all sports. Until next time at Nick’s, Happy New Year
That was fun, but I would have preferred to see the questions worded somewhat differently, such as: If you had to choose just one, which of these players card would you choose? Better than “Which would you want first”? I want them all! I look forward to the next survey.
It is amazing how Frank Robinson, Tom Seaver, and Bob Gibson are getting overlooked in the who’s overlooked question. I don’t see any evidence Aaron is overlooked in the hobby, but he’s the leading response to the question as I write this.
This poll makes me feel like a grumpy old man. Stupid kids with their fancy foil stamping. Get off my lawn!
I agree with Richard. I’ve literally dumped all my game used cards (including Clemente, Robinson and Paige) because the card companies won’t stand by them. They are cool, but there are now “event worn” jerseys and the glut on the market also is destroying the value. I would much rather see redemptions to win game used jerseys rather than getting a jersey card. For the price they are charging for Topps Dynasty, they could at least put a redemption card for an entire jersey in each pack!
I think the new sets of cards they have out are really nice to look at…and now they have refractors, x fractors, z fractors, and any type of shiny stuff you can put on a card. The increase of autos from todays baseball cards makes it worth something not only as a card collector but as a collector for all sports memorabilia. I also like the creative ideas for cards such as bat relics, glove relics, and even a few shoe relics in other sports.
I for one like the idea of “Game Used” cards if the manufacturer knows for certain it was game used. If a player is required by contract to supply a certain number of items they can change jerseys, pants, gloves every inning and create an abundance of items in a matter of a few games. I started collecting years 20+ years ago and have been trying to sell my collection which includes 275+ completed sets, Factory Sets and countless numbers of game used and Autographed items, never mind all the other inserts. Know one is interested. Everyone seems to have gone to the Bust a case and sell what is popular for quick cash scheme. Are there any true collectors anymore? Was great fun when I was collecting but now that there is only one Licensed manufacturer it has lost its luster and the prices are outrageous.
I have over 35k in mostly BASEBALL cards from 1950s to 1990, when things went south, from 87 on.And to get a card graded, boy what an ordeal! But that’s all that’s worth anything. I bought one of those vintage packs. Out came a vintage Roberto Clemente grade 8 was over joyed 1970.Then reprint was on back, tiny.JB!
