2016 Topps Gold Label Baseball marks the return of another brand from the card maker’s recent past. Like Topps Tek, which made its return in 2014 after more than a decade on the shelf, Gold Label comes back with a mix of familiar elements as well as some new ones.

2016 Topps Gold Label Baseball Header

Each 2016 Topps Gold Label Baseball box is kept on the small side with just seven packs. However, within each of those boxes is the promise of a framed autograph.

The 2016 Topps Gold Label Baseball checklist is kept small. Just 100 players are included. However, sticking with the brand’s original identity (that borrowed heavily from Flair Showcase), each card has three versions: Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3. Rather than taking a generic parallel approach, each class uses different images. With this structure, collectors could go for a basic set of any of the classes, a Franken-set mixing the classes to get one card of each player or a master set of 300 cards.

Another staple from Gold Label’s past returns with the general physical structure of the cards. It starts with glossy rainbow foil stock. Each card front also comes with a pair of images — something that’s rare in today’s hobby.

Even with the multiple tiers of base cards, 2016 Topps Gold Label Baseball has parallels as well. There’s Blue (Class 1 – 1:2 packs, Class 2 – 1:6, Class 3 – 1:20), Red (Class 1 – /100, Class 2 – /50, Class 3 – /25) and one-of-one Gold.

This marks the first time Topps has used framed autographs as a box hit. They come in three versions: Gold Frame, Black Frame (/50 or less) and Platinum Frame (1/1). All autographs in the product are on-card.

2016 Topps Gold Label Baseball does not have any additional inserts beyond the parallels and autographs.

In the past, Gold Label leaned towards the high end of Topps’ baseball portfolio. And while it’s not cheap, it’s still accessible. Expect boxes to run under $60 at the time of the set’s release.

While I like the structure of the base set, but $60 for a glorified Blaster box is too much. I could do without the autograph, too.

  2. Robert Belenzon 9 May, 2016 at 17:47

Well, I like it a whole lot more than Tek…but will be priced out of my price range.

I actually like this product given that they are doing
hard signed autographs. It all depends on just how short printed they make the better cards.

I think a set of the gold framed autos would look really nice.

  4. kris buonocore 10 May, 2016 at 07:29

while it is basically a $60 blaster box at least it isn’t another $300+ pack of 2 cards. looks good

  5. phillies_joe 10 May, 2016 at 11:50

Looks great…….always loved gold label. @ $1.71 per card…..not bad. Def need to see a checklist though. May grab a case.

  6. Kerry 17 October, 2016 at 21:09

I pre-ordered 4 boxes and am very anxious to see what’s inside! I don’t buy the high-end products so this is my luxury item purchase of 2016.

  7. joe 18 October, 2016 at 13:20

can’t wait! This was one of my favorite products and it is back. I have complete sets of every year that this product was out and I hope to do the same this year.

  8. Sam Rose 20 October, 2016 at 22:00

Well I have re-learned an old lesson. The sequel is NEVER as good as the original. I am quite disappointed in this cheap looking, cheap feeling product that I paid over $8.50 a pack for. Topps should be ashamed. Do NOT buy this product. If you liked the original Gold Label from the late 1990s then you will be as disappointed as I am.

  9. Vaughn Bailey 22 October, 2016 at 23:02

I don’t generally post on product, but just got off a two case break that was absolutely painful to go through. Not a single star hit, and only a handful of decent prospect hits. Autos were very pedestrian, and similar to other high volume Topps autos from other sets. No value whatsoever in the two cases. Parallels one per box, 1 auto, and everything else base. Cannot recommend this product at all. The two cases were largely identical with duplicate autos from both. One of the worst break nights I have been on, and not the fault of the breaker. Very disappointing. Had to really be to compel me to post.

  10. Kerry 24 October, 2016 at 17:10

I think this product is like any other Topps design…beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as there are many Topps products that others love that I could care less about. Though I feel bad for Vaughn, I think Sam is being a bit tough on it.
