The history between Sports Illustrated and Topps goes back to the magazine’s first issue in 1954. Inside was a sheet of 27 baseball cards featuring some of the game’s biggest stars. 2021 Topps x Sports Illustrated Baseball flips it around, creating cards out of some of the magazine’s memorable baseball covers.

The fronts are basically cover recreations with an additional frame with the player’s name and year of publication.

2021 Topps x Sports Illustrated Hank Aaron

Card backs offer a little more insight with a write-up and the exact issue date.

Every week, two new cards dropped exclusively on the Topps website. Each was available for just one week. It’s a print-on-demand product meaning that print runs are based on how many were purchased.

The set has 70 cards, which stays with the 70th Anniversary theme Topps is using in 2021.

Individually, cards cost $9.99 through the Topps site or $17.49 for a bundle of both cards for the week. Lots of five, ten or 20 copies of the same card are available at a discount. Collectors can also look to eBay and find cheaper rates during the sales window. A handful of dealers offered pre-sales where they bought in bulk and immediately sell cards that are still available to order closer to $5.50-$6 each.

This isn’t the first time that Sports Illustrated covers have made their way onto baseball cards. For example, in 1998 and 1999, Fleer produced a handful of SI-branded sets, some of which incorporated classic covers onto inserts.

When will TOPPS start printing PETE ROSE cards??? I know, I know, I know about the contract between MLB & Topps regarding eligible players but come on already!!! Pete has had over 20 SI covers and we aren’t going to see one of them reproduced in this new set. Bummer! The one with Ernie Bank & Rose would be sweet. Two great players in game action! Every year Topps puts out RETRO cards to insert in the yearly set without ROSE is a waste in my opinion. His cards still draw on the market and the newer versions would as well. Somebody’s leaving some money on the table and it ain’t Pete, he’s getting his. Fans like me are the ones missing out…and Topps because I’m not buying this set unless Pete Rose suddenly appears in it down the road!

    • Ryan Cracknell 16 March, 2021 at 16:23

@Bill – As long as Rose is banned by MLB, it’s unlikely he’ll be in any MLB products no matter who is making them.

Topps advertised these cards with this statement:

For every card, a White w/ Red stripes – /70, Canary Yellow – /25, Orange – /10, Red – /5 and Silver – /1 card will be randomly inserted into print runs.

Except for the Griffey autos, I haven’t seen any parallels for sale on eBay. Did Topps not print them?

  3. goblue98 4 May, 2021 at 13:16

@JP Caillault. I think that these are not on eBay because the only way you know if you get these cards, is when they actually ship it to you. I don’t think these are live yet from what I have seen.
