2020 Prizm checklist!!!
#31

RE: 2020 Prizm checklist!!!
Some good news on the retail shark front

First, the number of Targets limiting purchases is increasing

Second, as I understand from the whining from the Retail Shark Network, Target is starting to crack down on online purchasers who they suspect are using bots and reselling items.

Combined maybe that will mean that some football cards start making it to the shelves again. I do find the 2 box a day limit to be annoying if there is more than one new product I'd like to buy - but they have to do something with hte people who are buying everything and reslling it

Now, let's see the local tax authorities and the IRS go after the Retail Sharks for operating a business without a license and not paying taxes on their proceeds.

Good deal or not so much ?  Looks like Hobby boxes are in the 500 to 600 range.  Thought this price was decent for retail box.  Pull 1 or 2 Rodgers rookies that grade 10 and then maybe 1 or 2 Gore, Smith, or Miller rookies and the returned value is 2 or 3x what was paid.

There's 80 rookies in the set. I couldn't find any info on whether rookies are short printed or not. Beckett's page for 2005 Topps doesn't indicate it. 440 cards in the base set. The auction is for a box of 24 packs, 12 cards per pack. At most you'll get 288 cards for the base set assuming no duplicates and no inserts. You can't bank on even pulling 1 Rodgers, much less 2.

Recently some Aaron Rodgers BGS 9.5 rookies sold (not including shipping) $277, 255, and 285. Same card in a BGS 9 sold in the $125-160 range. A Frank Gore BGS 9.5 solf for $70.

Next, take into account grading costs, insurance, shipping, etc to encase a Rodgers card. Depending how fast you want it back, all your margin is eaten up.

Premium (aka 2-day) is $50 for no subgrades or $125 with subgrades. You'll get it back in 10+ business days
Express (aka 5-day) is $40 or $100. Turn around time is 15+ business days
Standard is $25 or $40. Turn around time is 16+ weeks.
Economy is $15 or $30. They say turn around time is 6+ months but if you bounce over to the grading forums you'll see people are waiting 12-15 months.
Those costs are purely grading per card. Doesn't include shipping, return shipping, or insurance.

If you are buying a box with the intent on flipping the ensuing break, it's a gamble like anything else. If you want to do it for fun and hope to hit the lottery on some cards, go for it! Just don't go in assuming you'll make money, odds are you won't. If you want a really nice Rodgers, Gore, or another RC, just buy the single and save $$$.

I thought the answer for "is this a good deal" is always "it's 2020, nothing is a good deal!"
