I think what you have to ask yourself is do you want to collect him because your a fan and you like his game or do you just want to buy his cards so you can make money on them later?
I think 90% of collectors lose money on cards. They pay high when he is hot and lose when they get disinterested and try to sell later.
The only guys really making money at selling cards are the guys who buy cases and get big hits and sell everything right away. Right after a new box comes out there are tons of people trying to collect their PC players or pick up rookie cards and buy autos and game used. They after a few weeks 75% f the people already have what they want and the sales go down and the prices go down. Sure there will be a few hot players who will stay strong during the season, but then summer and fall roll around and people aren't thinking about basketball anymore and prices start to drop. For prices to go up the player really has to step up big in the preason or when the season is starting or collector's just move on to someone else.
Sure you might buy a box for $100 and pull a Jordan AUTO and sell it for $600. So you have a profit of $500. But then you buy 10 more boxes for the season and don't hit anything. Now your negative $500. Sure you still have all the cards, but not anything hot that really sells. By the time you list them all on ebay and pay fees and get low bids, your lucky to even break even. Thats why I gave up on boxes. I just buy singles now. Sure I miss out on a big hit once in awhile, but they never happen enough to make it worth buying a boxes all the time.
