However I do think every good collection should at least have a Shaq RC and RC year insert so I will make my humble contribution. (The RCs should be in better condition but these were easier to access than my box with the slabbed Shaqs)

+1
I think that every basketball collection should have a nice selection of RC of the greats. Even if most can be found for a few $. If the card goes for over $50 it’s hard for EVERY collection to have it.

So I think the majority of collection should be the top players RC.

1988-89 Fleer Reggie Miller RC #57
1988-89 Fleer John Stockton RC #115
1988-89 Fleer Scottie Pippen RC #20
1989-90 Hoops Robison
1992-93 SkyBox Shaq #382 (SP)
1992-93 Topps Shaq #362
1996-97 Finest Iverson
1996-97 Finest Kobe #74
1998-99 Finest Carter

Cards like this, which all collectors have an opportunity to get.

Not just premium $100+ cards.

NBA 50 GREATEST AUTOGRAPHS - 48/50 - 96%

I am surprised that no one has mentioned 1986-87 Fleer Karl Malone, even though plenty of other 86-87 Fleer cards have been shown.
Personally, I think every collection should have at least 1 (even a common) card from each of the following sets: 86-87 Fleer, 80-81 Topps, 69-70 Topps. Also at least 1 rookie card of the following 1990s rookies (which could all be gotten for under $20 total, if you don't go after the best rookie card of each player).
90-91: Tim Hardaway, Gary Payton
91-92: Mutombo
92-93: Shaq, Mourning
93-94: Anfernee Hardaway, Webber
94-95: Kidd, Grant Hill
95-96: Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace
96-97: Garnett
97-98: Kobe, Ray Allen, Iverson
98-99: Duncan, Pierce
Collecting John Stockton, Karl Malone, Ivan Rodriguez, Gary Carter & UF player rookie year cards.  Plus Jedd Gyorko rookie and prospect cards.
Jedd Gyorko 2010-2013: Have 329/419 including 1/1s
