My first thought for short names was Mel Ott, then I realized Ty Cobb also has 6 letters, so there must be a player with 5 letters or less, otherwise it would be a tie.

Theres an Ed Ott, used to play for the pirates, the longest last name salty unless your counting full names

There was a Japanese pitcher with a 2 letter last name ... Fi, Ni, Ti (unless I'm thinking about elements on the periodic table ) .... Something like that ... I think his first name was 2 letters, too. Not sure if he ever actually pitched in an official major league game, but I remember a Topps baseball card
