Basically the main point that is always brought up is the MONEY. He needs to starting saving now, and if he can, sell some of his collection. Invest in some stocks, play your cards well. The best advice you can get is from an actual card shop. I would call a shop owner near you and have a sit down with him.

Keeping current is the big problem. You quickly sell off your most desirable inventory and are left with stuff that you can't sell.
You can expect a profit margin between 6 and 10%. If you need to make $20,000 a year that means you have to have a minimum of $212,000 to $222,000 in inventory.
Next of course is the money. Figure out what it will cost you for the first year and then multiply it by 4.
Also you cannot collect cards and sell them at the same time. Your best inventory tends to end up in your own collection.
Best thing you could do is start out sell at local card shows or online. You don't have the overhead and it will give you a chance to get used to the business.
