I usually stick with buying vintage OPC, topps, Parkhurst and some 90's inserts. For my 10 year old I usually buy a box of UD 1 and 2 plus singles off ebay. IMO boxes and packs are way over priced, there just isn't enough value in them for me.
Collecting Vintage OPC and older oddball and food issues as well as Maple Leafs.
Enjoy the hobby at it's purest form, treat it as you did as a kid. 
glad you got some items taken care off but it is sad
