1996 Pinnacle Mint Coins

1996 Pinnacle Mint Coins
I have about 70 coins, from this set, I'm just wondering if anyone knows how to distinguish brass from gold, and nickel from silver, short of having a jeweler test them?

As far as I can tell Pinnacle didn't include anything, with the coins, that might help identify what they are made of.

Back of the coins are clearly marked if its .999 fine silver or gold. They were only redeemable.

Actually I don't think the 1996 coins are marked. You should be able to tell the difference when they are all viewed together. Best way I can explain it is that the gold and silver ones are noticeably bright and shiny when compared with the brass and nickel ones. If you're not sure or can't tell a difference I would think you didn't have any. You can kind of see what I mean in htoutlaws' Barry Sanders Collection thread, if you navigate down to the 1996 Pinnacle Mint stuff.

He doesn't have the Silver coin (at least not next to the others) but you can see the difference between the brass and gold coins at least.

The ACTUAL Gold coin was via REDEMPTION only,

The Solid Silver came with a COA in the pack and looks like this.

Lastly, the pack inserted Gold Plated coin "outshines" the Brass by 10x and would stand out like a sore thumb.

Jaderock coming through! Thought of you when Brunell announced the draft pick a few days ago. Maybe a press photo in your future? Smile

As far as the 1996 coins are concerned, I believe the "Gold Plated" ones also read "Gold Plated" on the back, but I cannot confirm that.

I did not know there was also a "Gold" coin for the 1996 set, presumably a 1/1? I do know that the 1997 and the 1998 sets have a Gold 1/1 redemption.

Speaking of the 1997 coin set, there are many more parallels but those are differentiated by typeset on the backs. BTW, the OPG does not mention this but some of the parallels are serial numbered as follows: Brass Proofs (# 500m), Silver Proofs (# 250m) and Gold Proofs (# 100m).

The Gold Plated did NOT state that in 1996, but did so in subsequent years.

I was not sure about that, I was just making an assumption based on the 1997 issue. Thanks for setting me straight.

Also, to be honest I was a little skeptical about the existence of the 1996 gold coin at first so I looked in to it. On page 11 of the August 1996 issue of Beckett Football Monthly: [Image: Copyofscan0001_zps575e22c5.jpg]
According to the article these gold coins do exist but FWIW the article does not mention the brass parallel of the cards so the above information may not be completely accurate.

The 2004-05 Beckett annual on page 378 under the Pinnacle Mint Coins Brass section reads: "...A Solid Silver version of the coins was also randomly seeded in packs. It was the most difficult version to pull."

Missed out on the silver. But you can clearly tell if you have the Gold.
