As afar as the red, my guess it would be from the numbers of an old Oilers jersey... The patches are layers, sewn together at the edges.... so when the companies cut up the old Oilers jersey numbers, the layers separate. The companies, rather than waste the jersey number layer underneath, cut up the underneath layer and use it as a patch as well.... That creates odd creations like your George and these Marinos....
