Hello, haven't really collected vintage but I want to work on a 1958 Topps set. Random number, I know, but that was the year my father was born so it has some personal attatchment to me. Anywho, I just need some tips on this set. Any big error cards? Are there any fake ones out there? What do I look for in this set? Just pretty much any tip that will help make collecting this set easier. I'm pretty anal with condition, so I usually look for nice corners and centering.

I love the 58 set. From a Beckett Annual "In the first series some cards were issued with yellow name or team lettering as opposed to the common white lettering." Yellow lettering are more valuable. Good luck with the set, it should be fun!

Card #145 was not issued. It was supposed to be Ed Bouchee but he was suspended from baseball due to exposing himself to young girls after the '57 season. He got three years probation and spent some time in a psych ward in Connecticut. He was then allowed to return to play for the Phillies in the middle of the season of '58. Anyway, that's why the card was never actually made. No, it's not a lie.

There are 33 cards in the set that have the white/yellow lettering variations that wolverine mentioned before me. The yellow ones seem to be the ones that carry a premium.
