Cool story! I can't remember if the 1st pack of cards I was given by my Dad were '87 or '88. I know they were Topps, but we really bonded over the '88 and '89 Topps packs. 1987 is still considered as a great design by me, even though MANY collectors HATE them. I was born in '78, so I wouldn't have memories of opening anything around that time. My Dad waited until he was sure that I was interested in MLB before buying packs for me. I remember watching the Cards lose that '87 WS, but I don't remember whether I got packs of cards before or after that happened. I do know that Ozzie Smith was the reason I got into MLB and collecting MLB cards.
A child watching a man backflip into his position on the field can easily entice that child to be interested in baseball! Wink
