Produced by the Exhibit Supply Company of Chicago, the 1948-52 Football Exhibit cards are unnumbered, blank-backed, and produced on thick card stock. Although we list the more common black and white cards below, some of the cards were issued in other colors as well including sepia, tan, green, red, pink, blue, and yellow. The primary method of distribution for the cards was through mechanical vending machines. Advertising panels on the front of these machines displayed from one to nine cards as well as the price for a card which was originally one-cent but later raised to two-cents. Each card measures approximately 3 1/4" by 5 3/8" and features a pro or college player. Several cards in the checklist below (Sammy Baugh, Glenn Dobbs, Otto Graham, Pat Harder, Jack Jacobs, Sid Luckman, Johnny Lujack, Marion Motley, Emil Sitko, Steve Van Buren, Bob Waterfield, and Tank Younger) have the same photo as in the Exhibit Sports Champions set of 1948; however, cards in this series do not have the single agate line of type describing the player at the bottom of the card. The cards were issued in three groups of 32 primarily during 1948, 1950, and 1951. We've included what is thought to be the year/years of issue for each card. The 16-cards in the 1951/1952 group are the most plentiful as they were reissued intact in sepia tone in 1952 (and perhaps 1953 as well). Some veteran collectors believe the second group may have been issued in 1949 rather than 1950. Cards issued during and after 1951 are marked as DP's as they are quite common compared to the other cards in the set. Several players, such as Creekmur, Houck, and Martin, are rumored to exist, but they have not been verified and are assumed not to exist in the checklist below. The American Card Catalog designation is W468. A football exhibit checklist card has also been found but was apparently produced in very limited quantity in 1950 only. This checklist card is known to exist in green and black-and-white and is identical to the Bednarik card but has the 32 players from the 1950 set listed on its front.
