Your Turn (Beckett Basketball No. 243): What one rookie will you collect this year?
By Chris Olds | Beckett Basketball Editor
The NBA season nearly upon us — another year ready to take shape, but this time without any legal drama — and it’s one that has a double-dose of something that most collectors love.
Rookie Cards.
Panini America‘s offerings this season will include Rookie Cards from both last season and this year’s NBA Draft crop, which presents a bit of a challenge for some of us.
For the next issue of Beckett Basketball, we simply want to know … What one rookie will you collect … and why?
Tell us in the comments below. Please include your name and location with your comment. We’ll run a selection of the best answers in the next issue.

Thomas Robinson cause he’s amazing
Royce White! I am an ISU alum. Gotta support my Cyclones! He may have only played at ISU for one year but it was a fun one! Go Cyclones!
It’s gotta be Thomas Robinson … I’ll think he’ll bring some necessary toughness and low-post scoring (other than DeMarcus Cousins) to the lineup. I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see him play some small forward. He’s very skilled with the ball for a big guy … then again, that’s what Sacramento has always liked with their post players.
I would say Terrance Ross. He is the future at the guard position for my hometown raptors. He will learn from from an underrated player in Calderon and become the most talked about pick of this years draft! Not too many people heard of this player from the west coast but when the season starts you will definitely see something!
jeffery taylor. cause np one knows how good hes gpnna be but me!
For me, it’d be Lavoy Allen. Being a Philadelphia 76ers and Temple owls fan, it is the best of both worlds. He showed what he could do last year for a late 2nd round pick, and I think he’ll have a solid career in the NBA.
The Brow and Kidd-Gilchrist. Getting in on the ground floor with these guys. I like their style of play and look forward to seeing them get in the game!
I will probably collect Kyrie Irving. “Uncle Drew” is the truth and all his rookies are going to be in this year’s sets. If you only mean rookies for rookies this season, I like the Unibrow Anthony Davis
Im from N.O. and Anthony Davis is playing for the Hornets now so im rooting for him
No question for me its Panini exclusive Harrison Barnes. As I collect Former Tar Heels, Harrison is the best of the bunch and is going to have a great career. He was clutch for most of his UNC career and his game is taylor made for the NBA.
all of them, thats just because i only collect sets and not players
anthont davis, cause he rocks
Billy Hamilton -He is a running fool!
Jimmer Fredette. He is from a small town here in upstate NY. Happy to see a local player make it! We’ve only had a few professional athletes from the area.
For me it has to be Brandon Knight of the Detroit Pistons. He is a star in the making of a really good looking young team.
I have not decided yet…. I am still upset with Panini’s decision to do a double RC year redemption program….
If Panini puts last year’s RC cards in 2012-13 products & calls them RC’s… then why release redemptions for auto rookies in 2011-12 products…. ?? They will not be considered RC’s, because it is after they’ve already played for a season, well, a reduced season….
The only RC’s from last year, would be an unknown/unpopular player that did not have a card produced, but now has gained stardom for their playing skills.. maybe, a free agent….
I believe most of us collectors understand the XRC thing… when it comes to redemptions.. UD was been doing that for a few years with their FINEST products…
Now, Panini, has tried that concept for this upcoming years RC’s.. they released non-auto redemptions for 2012-13 RC’s in their 2011-12 products……..
If panini was not able to produce a RC card, because of the shorten season.. then throw in some redemptions… but why put all this hype into their products about a double RC year… all it is, is a marketing tool so they can squeeze every penny out of us collectors…
like with Hoops… they threw in double RC redemption program… the future RC’s are numbered, but the season just ended, well, there RC’s are not numbered.. so collectors were going crazy, trying to pick them up on the cheap.. hoping to score big, if that numbered card turns out to be the RC of the Year for 2011-12… or another great RC from that class..
sorry, Panini.. I haven’t bought any boxes since Preferred was released & do not plan on buying any in the near future… cheaper to buy singles than gamble on boxes of unknown cards….
I’m not in collecting basketball cards for profit….. I do it as a hobby & a love for the sport!!
free speech!!
Royce White he will be a great big man on a team full of power forwards. Lets Just hope he can get to the games…
The moment Kenneth Faried aka “The Manimal,” set foot on an NBA court, I knew that he is someone that I wanted to collect. The energy that he brings to the game is infectious, to both teammates and fans alike. I was disappointed that the lockout led to the exclusion of RC’s in 2011-12 products, but it made the release of his RC’s in 2012-13 all the more worthwhile.
Thought you might get a kick out of this…….My Grand kids and I were opening up a box of cards a few weeks ago.
Well, after explaining that we must take good care of the cards when opening the packs so we can get them graded, I heard my eight year old Grand daughter say to her brother (11 yr. old), ” OH, Grandpa is gonna be MAD!
Somebody scribbled on this card”
Well that scribble was a 2010 Bowman Platinum Mike Trout Auto.
Evidently Grandpa wasn’t mad.
She was so excited once she found out what she had pulled. Being from So. Cal. even my eight year old grand daughter knows who Mike Trout is.
So now you can imagine what she wants to do at Grandpa’s house….Bust open some boxes.
I think I have created a Future Collector!!
Thanks guys,
ED
I must also say I don’t understand the Double rc redemption. Two diffrent rc’s years bad idea thais is the method on how not to create intrest I guess. Unless you get the no 1 pick. Panini had the moment and they dropped the ball —turnover now let’s get Topps back in the game please. Can you imagin a Topps chrome rc auto Kyrie Irvin or Fab melo.
Fab Melo ,Anthony Davis ,Barnes Gilchrist this is a great draft year 2012 that is.
THe 90’s was great because more companies competed for the dollars of collectors and thus greater innovation.
Come-on man NBA Give us back our Chrome rc’s bring back Topps.
