2015 Topps Archives Signature Series Baseball

By Ryan Cracknell | Hobby Editor

Old players (as in, they’re no longer playing) signing old cards. The  2015 Topps Archives Signature Series Baseball checklist is relatively simple. Every card in the product is an original Topps card from a past product that has since been signed. Each pack has one autographed card.

Like virtually every product, the popularity of signers is mixed. Top-level signers include Sandy Koufax, Hank Aaron and Ken Griffey Jr. On the other end of the spectrum are the likes of Lenny Dykstra, Mookie Wilson and Vinny Castilla. So even with the weaker signers, they at least had significant careers. Their autographs just might not be among the valuable in the hobby.

Some of the lesser names might command some early interest on the secondary market. Typically, the first copies of cards for players like Omar Vizquel and Andres Galarraga can pop big as some dedicated collectors often try to outbid one another.

The product has just one card per box. When it releases on December 9, you can expect to pay about $45-60 per box.

If Topps can get Griffey Jr. to sign for this new product, why can’t they get him to sign his 2015 Topps Tribute dual auto with Hank Aaron? Hate when you are waiting almost a year for a redemption and boom, the player shows up in a new release with a shiny new auto.

    A bit confused here.
    Is this a buy-back product?
Also, for the price and given the fact that better players always are short printed, it seems like bad product.
Out of this list, I see maybe 10 “winners” and even some of those I’m not 100% sure on.
Followed by perhaps another 10 you could break even on. The rest …. no, just no.

Now if these are all buy backs and those cards happen to be in excellent condition, with a decent base
value w/o the autograph, you improve things somewhat.

Def. a secondary market product. No way a lot of folks will be paying $45-60 for a “chance” to pull a Bernie Williams auto card. Condition value of the cards will play a big part on if this is a hit or not. $3,015 to collect all 67 @ $45 a pop…..can do better trading and buying singles.

Interesting to see Ernie Banks in here….I assume that all are on-card auto’s (?).

    Thanks for the preview.

If this is anything like 2004 Topps Originals, these will all be buyback cards of varying vintage and condition. They will also likely be various serial numbering, with each respective player rookie card being the rarest.
To address phillies_joe specifically, this product is a player collector type product and not something more than a handful people will will attempt to put together as a set, especially considering there is no real base set and the cards will be from varying years. Also, it’s not all that surprising to see Ernie Banks on the checklist. A product like this takes years to develop as Topps cannot simply manufacture the buyback cards. I would be surprised to see any more Ernie Banks on card autos in future products though.
