Victor Wembanyama, get well soon! We, the collectors of cards and card chasers, appreciate your rare gifts and need you to continue to apply your talents to the game of basketball for the betterment of the hobby, and, of course, for the overall growth of the game. Thanks to the history of card manufacturers, we know that they will not let us down with cool cardboard to follow around, like the pictured 2023-24 Panini Select Sparks Black Finite Prizms.
Excuse the over enthusiasm for the still just 21-year-7-foot, 3-inch, tall old young man from Le Chesnay, France, but the NBA has seen its fair share of amazingly talented players robbed of great careers due to injury and/or health concerns; see Derrick Rose.
As is, “Wemby” is the future of the NBA after being the first overall pick in 2023 by the San Antonio Spurs. Wembanyama lived up to the media hype earning NBA Rookie of the Year (2024), NBA All-Defensive First Team (2024), All-Star (2025), and leading the league in blocks in back-to-back seasons.
On Feb. 20, Wemby’s season was shutdown 46 games in after being diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder… that has not slowed down the want or value of his cards.
The pulled Sparks Black Finite Prizms #7 Wemby card is a rare 1-of-1. The value of the card has not been set in public auction or on the secondary market.
Perhaps a close representation of the value is a 2023-24 Panini Select Courtside Black Finite Prizm #288 Victor Wembanyama 1-of-1 rookie card (pictured below) graded a 10 by PSA that sold for $137,128 at a Golden Auction on Feb. 2 of this year.
Panini put out a wide array of Wemby rookie cards in their 2023-24 Select line. From the different image looks, the variations ranged from Select Blue, Select Color Wheel, Draft Selections, Selections Memorabilia, and the Black Finite Prizms (#29). Short prints in the Select Draft Selections were Memorabilia Blue Prizms (75), Copper Prizms (49), Gold Prizms (10), Green Prizms (5), Purple Prizms (99), and Tie-Dye Prizms (25).
Panini produced hundreds of different cards to be chased. One of the more popular raw is the Light Blue Disco #288 that ranges from $800 to $1,500 raw.
