High-end Topps cards bring high-end rewards. In the 2024 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball set, released on Feb. 5, 2025, the manufacturer does not disappoint collectors stocking packs and boxes with value chase cards. One within the subset collectors would love to have is the Paul Skenes Liquid Silver rookie card.
With a set size of 70 cards featuring over 60 players, two boxes per case, and 10 cards per pack, the feel is something big will be pulled with each rip and flip of the card. One of the next level additions in the set are the Autograph Diamond Relics (/5), Autographed Diamond in the Rough Relics (/5), and Dual Autographed Diamond Relic Books (/3) featuring actual diamonds on the card to go along with the player autographs.
Relics in the set also include pieces of cleats, patches and logo patches, jumbo patches, and dual-player auto relics.
The Liquid Silver insert features 10 players: Juan Soto, Shota Imanaga, Julio Rodriguez, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Jackson Holliday, Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Elly De La Cruz, Jackson Chourio, and Paul Skenes.
The raw values for #LS-8 De La Cruz ($2,600-plus), #LS-10 Skenes ($3,300-plus), and #LS-6 Ohtani ($3,500-plus) provide instant wins for collectors. As is always the case, put a grade on there, the card values soar. The aforementioned Ohtani can net over $16,000 as a 10, Skenes’ is at $15,000-plus, and De La Cruz’s Liquid Silver can go for $12,000 or more.
On March 29, a buyer made a quality investment with the value rising buying the pictured BGS graded 9.5 Skenes card for $2,257 during a Goldin Auction.
Skenes is on a meteoric rise. After helping the LSU Tigers to a College World Series championship in 2023, the right-handed pitcher earned National Pitcher of the Year and the Dick Howser Trophy after being named CWS Most Outstanding Player. The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Skenes first overall, giving their top prospect the call up on May 11, 2024.
Skenes was selected as an MLB All-Star and given the nod to start the game. Skenes would later be named National League Rookie of the Year.
Even without much offensive help from the Pirates’ lineup, Skenes (4-6) has dominated on the mound in 2025 with a 1.78 ERA producing 97 strikeouts in 96 innings pitched.
