For more than 80 years, Marvel has been carving out a colorful history of heroes, villains and super stories. And while there are plenty of through lines, eight decades is a long time. Many trends have come and gone. Characters, art and storytelling continue to evolve. 2020 Upper Deck Marvel Ages charts some of that history through the medium of trading cards.
While not a particularly high-end release, the checklist brings a lot of variety, both in themes and style. Each hobby box has plenty of inserts, parallels and other chase elements but they’re not necessarily traditional hits. Sketch cards and other premium inserts are available. They’re just harder to find.
2020 Upper Deck Marvel Ages Checklist Overview
The base set is a big one. A total of 300 cards dig into the characters of the Marvel Universe. Like many modern Upper Deck sets, not all base cards are available in equal numbers. The checklist is divided up into three tiers, each one dropping at different rates.
Parallels come in a couple of different forms. For starters, there are Stickers, which are one per pack. Additional foil parallels are approximately 1:3 packs (four per hobby box).
Photo Variations are also available. On the easier side of the chase, these are eight per box.
Every pack has at least two inserts.
Artist Spotlight cards highlight key issues throughout the decades while providing some background on the creators.
Throwing it back to the days of channel surfing over cereal sunrises is Saturday Morning cartoons. Featuring the art of Tom Morgan, these depict various Marvel teams as though they were part of animation’s Golden Age of super heroes.
Totally Toys uses the art of John Stanko and Caio Cacau to package up various heroes and villains like they were sitting on the shelves of Toys “R” Us or KB Toys.
Rounding out the easiest inserts in 2020 Upper Deck Marvel Ages is Gamerverse.
With so much history, characters have changed over the years. Decades (1:6 packs) highlight some of those evolutions. The card designs change with the characters, drawing inspiration from the focus decade.
Word Cloud inserts use descriptive words to draw various Marvel characters. These combine with Flavorful inserts to fall one per hobby box.
Premium Chase Cards
Lenticular Puzzle cards land in the form of special hot packs where they all come together. Puzzle form 3D splash pages.
Fresnel cards, which are about three per case, use translucent stock. These highlight characters with a design that makes them look as though they’re standing in front of a lighthouse light.
Sketch cards are tough. They average out to about one or two per ten-box case.
Coinage is another high-end leaning chase set. These have coins embedded in them totalling the original cover price of key Marvel comics.
Comic Clippings take frames from original comics and put them into cards, kind of like a memorabilia card. The Invincible Iron Man #1, The Invincible Iron Man #55 (with the first appearance of Thanos), Doctor Strange’s debut in Strange Tales #110 and Black Widow’s first appearance in Tales of Suspense #52 are among the issues cut up for the cards. Autograph versions from comic creators are also available from the likes of Jim Starlin, Jim Steranko, Bill Sienkiewicz, Marv Wolfman and more.
Coinage and Comic Clippings inserts combine to work out to be about one, sometimes two, per case.
The Ages highlight broader Marvel runs of the Golden, Silver, Copper and Bronze eras. These rare cards have pieces of metal embedded in them.
