Upper Deck released a pair of statements to distributors about two forthcoming products on Monday, with one product getting the red light and the other one getting a green light for some higher-end autograph additions.
First, the company has decided to scrap its plans for a 2010 Ultimate Collection Football set, which would have been a college release under its exclusive deal with the Collegiate Licensing Company. The company cited the present state of the industry, which is crowded with many slow-moving, perhaps overproduced products at this time.
“We are well aware of the difficulties that the current market is facing and continues to fight through,” said a statement to distributors. “We understand and can appreciate those real challenges, and feel that it is our duty as a manufacturer to react to those challenges when possible. Therefore, we have made the decision to cancel 2010 Ultimate Collection Football at this time. In the meantime, we will be focusing our efforts on making 2010 SP Authentic Football all that it can be and more.”
Ultimate Collection had been scheduled for a January release.
Upper Deck’s second announcement was in regard to its 2010-11 SP Authentic Basketball release, which is also a CLC- approved college- and high school-themed product. It will now have a pair of six-box inner cases in each 12-box case with each half containing some guaranteed big names.
In one half, the case will guarantee either a Michael Jordan or LeBron James autograph.
In the second half-case, there will be an autograph from James, Jordan or one of the following players: Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Julius Erving, Bill Russell, Derrick Rose or Demarcus Cousins.
