Up for Auction: 2002-03 SP Game Used Edition Michael Jordan Gold Auto /10

Everything that needed to happen to highlight the greatness of Michael Jordan during his career perfectly aligned. The popularity of the game was exploding, marketing and advertising was shifting towards charismatic sports celebrities, more NBA games were being nationally televised, Jordan was amazingly talented, athletic, and charismatic, and the card market was booming.
Throughout MJ’s 15-year career and beyond, there have been important trading card releases that stand above the rest, and one of the unique productions is on auction with Heritage.
Among the many standout cards bearing “His Airness” include 1984-85 Star #101 XRC, 1986-87 Fleer #57, 1986-87 Fleer Sticker #8, 1987-88 Fleer #59, 1993-94 Finest Refractor #1, and so on.
Marking Jordan’s return from his second retirement, Upper Deck produced two short prints highlighting the GOAT with his new team:
- 2002-03 SP Game Used Special SIGnificance #MJ Michael Jordan /50
- 2002-03 SP Game Used Special SIGnificance Gold #MJ Michael Jordan /10
One of the key markings of the Gold parallel is the gold background behind Jordan. The blue ink signature running vertically beautifully stands out on the white card backdrop.
Upper Deck randomly inserted the Gold parallel cards in packs at the time of the release adding the thrill to the chase. Other players receiving the Gold parallel card treatment included Andre Miller, Darius Miles, Jason Kidd, Jason Richardson, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Lamar Odom, Paul Pierce, and Shareef Abdul-Rahim.
Nearly five years ago, the serial numbered 7/10 in the Gold autographed release was sold during a Goldin Auctions event. The card earned BGS 9.5 Gem-Mint and the AU scored a 10. The card sold during the 2020 auction went for $4,200 after the buyer’s premium.
Up for auction now with Heritage, ending on Oct. 24, is serial number 2/10. The BGS card grade earned a Pristine 10 with the autograph scoring a 9.
At the time of this post, bidders have the card at $19,520 with the buyer’s premium. The estimated value of the card is $50,000.
Also of “significant” value is the Game Used Special SIGnificance #MJ Michael Jordan /50. Beckett Online Price Guide values the card raw from $1,000 EX-MT to $4,000 Mint.
During the two-season run with the Washington Wizards, now 38- and 39-years-old, Jordan averaged a combined 21.2 points per game, ending his career at 30.1 ppg.
