While Porcello is deserving, I think that proclaiming that Topps is a “joke” because he was excluded, is unwarranted. From a statistical standpoint, Hanson’s and Happ’s numbers were just as impressive as Porcello’s. Porcello had fewer strikeouts even though he pitched more innings. Porcello lost twice as many games and had an ERA that was a full run higher. Happ also had three complete games and two shutouts. Porcello also gave up three more homers than Happ, while only pitching four more innings. Again, I’m not saying Porcello isn’t deserving of the honor, but excluding any one of the three would not necessitate condemnation of Topps.
