As Formula 1 surges in popularity both in the rating and in the hobby, Max Verstappen cards have also taken off. Although his earliest cardboard appearances date back to 2016 (when he was still a teenager), it wasn’t until Topps took over the worldwide F1 card license in 2020 that they hit the mainstream.

At this point, still hasn’t appeared in a lot of sets. But with the build of modern products and their parallels, the number of Max Verstappen cards is growing.

Here’s a look at some of the key Max Verstappen cards that are out there and where you can find them. A handful of more affordable choices follow.

Most Valuable and Important Max Verstappen Cards

The following list highlights the best and most valuable early Max Verstappen cards. It’s not a definitive checklist of all of his cards.

2016 Top Trumps Formula 1 Grand Prix Heroes Max Verstappen

The first Max Verstappen card isn’t a traditional trading card. Rather, it’s part of a game. Over the years, Top Trumps has released decks for a wide range of themes in sports, entertainment, music and more. The 2016 Top Trumps Formula 1 Grand Prix deck pre-dates Verstappen’s mainstream racing cards by several years. It isn’t particularly rare but its early release makes it an extremely important release, nonetheless.

Verstappen has a second 2016 card Top Trumps card, this one part of the Formula 1 Helden release. This translates to “Heroes,” which is what it is sometimes referred to as in English countries. Like the Grand Prix card, it’s another game card that’s taller than a traditional card and has round corners like a playing card.

2020 Topps Chrome Formula 1 Max Verstappen #6

The 2020 Topps Chrome Formula 1 Max Verstappen is the Dutch racer’s first mainstream trading card found in packs. To that end, for those looking for a Max Verstappen Rookie Card, this fits the traditional criteria. Like all things Topps Chrome, there are also lots of parallels to chase including the one-of-one Superfractor.

While this is considered Verstappen’s main card in 2020 Topps Chrome, he appears on a dozen other subset cards on the 200-card checklist. These commemorate things like race wins and other highlights. Subset cards are also significantly less expensive, offering something for those on a tighter budget.

2020 Topps Chrome Formula 1 Autographs Max Verstappen #F1A-MV /52

In addition to having some of the first mainstream Max Verstappen cards, 2020 Topps Chrome Formula 1 also has his first autograph card. But it’s not an easy one to land with the base versions having just 52 numbered copies. Various parallels bring that number up if you take them all as a whole, but there are still less than 200 total across all colors.

One of the Red Refractor parallels sold for $90,000 in June, 2022 through Goldin.

Parallels: Gold Refractors (/50), Gold Wave Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractors (1/1)

2020 Topps Chrome Formula 1 Image Variation Refractors Max Verstappen #6

2020 Topps Chrome Formula 1 has short print Image Variations for base cards of ten top racers. These look like standard Refractors only with a different photo. To that end, they’re a little sneaky. These variations are rare with one landing every 228 packs. That makes the Verstappen itself a 1:2,280 card. That rarity plus the connection to his base card give this one significant value.

Verstappen has a couple of standard insert cards in 2020 Topps Chrome F1 as well. Track Tags is a particularly popular set, in large part due to its colorful design that’s a lot bolder than all of his other early cards. The young standout is one of 15 racers in the set with cards landing 1:6 packs (approximately three per hobby box).

Parallels: Gold Refractors (/50), Gold Wave Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Printing Plates Black (1/1), Printing Plates Cyan (1/1), Printing Plates Magenta (1/1), Printing Plates Yellow (1/1), Superfractors (1/1)

2020 Topps Chrome Sapphire Formula 1 Max Verstappen #6

2020 Topps Chrome Sapphire F1 is an offshoot of the main Topps Chrome release. And while all of the mainstream Formula 1 releases have taken off, this one in particular has soared. Verstappen’s base Sapphire card is similar to his Topps Chrome card only with the blue patterned background. Sapphire was a limited, online-only release that sold out very quickly. In the weeks and months that followed, prices rose and rose, particularly for unopened boxes. That said, this card sells very well despite its lack of numbering or any other premium feature. The branding is enough.

Parallels: Aqua (/99), 70th Anniversary (/70), Gold (/50), Orange (/25), Purple (/10), Red (/5), Padparadscha (1/1)

2020 Topps Chrome Sapphire Formula 1 Image Variations Max Verstappen #6

Like the regular Topps Chrome release, Verstappen has an Image Variation in Sapphire. It’s the same SP photo so it doesn’t stand out quite as much as its own thing. That said, it’s a Max Verstappen card from the landmark release.

Unlike the Topps Chrome version, the Sapphire variation comes with a full slate of parallels as well.

2020 Topps Dynasty Formula 1 Autograph Patches Max Verstappen (3 different) /10

There are several Max Verstappen cards on the 2020 Topps Dynasty Formula 1 checklist. All are giants because that’s the way the ultra-premium line is set up. Every card in the product is an autograph numbered to 10 or less.

The Patch Autographs are the main part of any Topps Dynasty release. Verstappen has three cards on this part of the checklist, each of which has a different photo. Unlike his other 2020 autograph cards, the signatures are all on-card. The swatch is a premium jumbo piece as well.

The young driver also has a Autographed Flag (/4), Autographed Flag Jumbo Patch (1/1), Dual Relic Autograph (/10) and Triple Relic Autograph (/10) in 2020 Topps Dynasty Formula 1.

This print-on-demand card was available for a week through the Topps website shortly after Verstappen’s win in Dubai. The print run of 4,047 isn’t small but it’s not as big as several others.
