Artifacts are one of the most flexible card types in Magic: The Gathering, offering utility and synergy that can fit into nearly any strategy.

Whether you’re interested in massive armies of constructs, tricky replication loops, or high-speed affinity engines, the commander you choose defines how your machine will run.

Today, we’re looking at five of the best legendary creatures currently leading the artifact archetype in the Commander format.

Top Five Artifact Deck Commanders

Urza, Chief Artificer

Urza, Chief Artificer is the premier choice for players who want to overwhelm the table with a biological and mechanical army. Operating in Esper colors, he provides a stable foundation for a creature-heavy artifact shell.

His defining characteristic is Affinity for artifact creatures, a variant of the classic mechanic that counts your mechanical creatures to reduce his own casting cost.

This allows you to deploy him much earlier than his base cost suggests, provided you’ve spent the early turns establishing a board of low-cost artifact creatures.

Once on the battlefield, Urza grants Menace to your entire artifact creature army. In a multiplayer format, this is an incredibly potent form of evasion, forcing opponents to double block your threats or let damage through.

His true power, however, is his ability to create a 0/0 Construct token at the beginning of your end step.

These tokens grow in power and toughness for every artifact you control, creating an exponential growth curve that can turn a small utility board into a lethal force within a few turns.

Mishra, Eminent One

While his brother focuses on mass production, Mishra, Eminent One is all about the surgical replication of non-creature artifacts. Mishra is the king of the value engine strategy in Grixis colors.

At the beginning of combat on your turn, Mishra creates a 4/4 Construct token copy of one of your non-creature artifacts, which gains haste and is sacrificed at the end of the turn.

The strategic depth of this ability comes from enters the battlefield and leaves the battlefield triggers.

A staple like Ichor Wellspring becomes a powerhouse with Mishra, you draw a card when the copy enters, and another when the Warform is sacrificed at the end of the turn.

For more controlling builds, copying Spine of Ish Sah allows you to destroy a permanent every turn, while the sacrifice trigger returns the original Spine to your hand for repeated use.

Chiss-Goria, Forge Tyrant

Chiss-Goria, Forge Tyrant has redefined Mono-Red artifact strategies by leaning into high-speed aggression and the ability to cheat out massive threats.

As a nine-mana Dragon, her Affinity for artifacts makes it trivial to cast her for as little as two red mana in a deck filled with mana rocks and Treasure tokens. Because she has haste, she can immediately impact the game on the turn she arrives.

Her strength lies in her attack trigger, where you exile the top five cards of your library and may cast an artifact from among them, which also gains affinity for artifacts.

This allows you to bypass the casting costs of high-impact permanents like Portal to Phyrexia or Blightsteel Colossus.

Iron Man, Titan of Innovation

Iron Man, Titan of Innovation offers a unique tutor-style lead that functions like a mechanical version of the Birthing Pod strategy.

As a Jeskai commander, he creates a Treasure token whenever he attacks and then allows you to sacrifice a non-creature artifact to search your library for an artifact with a mana value exactly one higher.

This pod chain provides incredible consistency, as you can sacrifice the Treasure token you just created to find a one-mana utility piece like Sol Ring or Retrofitter Foundry.

In competitive environments, Iron Man is often used to assemble the Basalt Monolith and Rings of Brighthearth combo to generate infinite mana, which can then be dumped into a tutored Goblin Cannon for an immediate victory.

For more casual games, he is an excellent lead for an equipment-based “Voltron” deck, using his search ability to find the perfect weapon for any situation.

Kilo, Apogee Mind

The breakout star for counter-based strategies is Kilo, Apogee Mind, a Jeskai commander that proliferates whenever it becomes tapped.

Kilo serves as the ultimate engine for any deck that cares about loyalty, charge, or +1/+1 counters.

Unlike other proliferate leads, Kilo’s trigger is tied to a simple physical action, tapping, which makes it highly abusable through untap effects like Freed from the Real or Pemmin’s Aura.

A Kilo deck thrives on counterintelligence by establishing an infinite tap-and-untap loop, you can proliferate counters until you hit a win condition.

This might mean putting 20 charge counters on a Darksteel Reactor for an instant win or growing a Walking Ballista to infinite size to clear the board of opponents.
