Sports Artist Spotlight: Mike Kupka
Mike Kupka has been creating art for “as long as I can remember.”
“I always had a pencil or marker in my hand drawing something,” he adds. “Drawing covers for book reports [which probably helped me pass], copied comics and album covers or created things for friends and family.”

Mike says one of his biggest breaks came while he was a second-year student at the duCret School of Art in New Jersey. There he was introduced to illustrator Peter Caras, whose work has graced the covers of more than 1,700 books and magazines, and who had been mentored by Norman Rockwell and James Bama.
“I’ve studied with Caras since 1991, developing my skills and knowledge to pursue a career in the arts,” says Kupka. “He not only taught me techniques for creating better art but more importantly, how to be a professional. I’m not just fortunate to be mentored by him, but I’m proud to call him my friend.”

Kupka has done work for Beckett Media, as well as Topps, MLB, NHL, Disney, Marvel, Warner Brothers and Lucas Films among others.
His favorite work to date? His Thurman Munson done in sepia tone, the first piece he published after obtaining his MLB license. “It simply reminds me of my childhood watching Yankee games with my grandfather. When I decided to put all my focus and savings into getting the license, the fi st painting I created was my favorite player, Thurman Munson.”

Mike’s time is largely spent paint-ing commissioned work for clients, and is always accept-ing new clients and commissions. His work can be viewed on his website.
