Rated rookies in any sport can come and go, but then there are those who endure changing the game forever. On the ice, Alex Ovechkin has set the record book etching his name forever in that beautiful museum over in Toronto. Washington Capitals fans or not, those who have collected Ovechkin’s cards along the way are reaping the benefits.

Seemingly improbable to still be on the ice after being the first overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, Ovi is still slapping meaningful shots beyond being the league’s all-time goal scorer by helping the Caps to a first-place finish in the Metropolitan.

In the hobby, released in 2006 as part of the 2005-06 season’s set, Upper Deck had 188 The Cup Autographed Rookie Patches Gold Rainbow for fans. The print run varied for as many as 87 for Sidney Crosby and as little as three for Dion Phaneuf.

Some of the cards in the set that still bring in good money include Jim Howard, Ryane Clowe, Patrick Eaves, Maxime Talbot, Ryan Getzlaf, Cam Ward, Tomáš Fleischmann, Steve Bernier, Peter Budaj, Johan Franzen, and Robert Nilsson among many others.

Crosby’s card can trade in value from $500 to $12,500… but Ovi, to no surprise, set another record.

At a Sotheby’s auction on Monday, April 21, 2005-06 The Cup Autographed Rookie Patches Gold Rainbow #179 Alex Ovechkin JSY BGS graded Near-Mint 8 sold for $381,000.

Putting the increased value of his card in perspective, the same card, a PSA 10, sold for $182,400 during a Goldin’s Auction in 2021.

Ovi is now in third place all-time in most valuable hockey cards sold with a 2015-16 Upper Deck The Cup Connor McDavid selling for $228,000 at a Heritage auction on July 24, 2022, and Wayne Gretzky’s 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee rookie PSA 10 selling for $3.75 million in 2021 privately.
