If your home address is on the north side of Chicago, or anywhere in the state of Illinois, Shota Imanaga may be your unofficial 2024 Rookie of the Year. “The Throwing Philosopher” proved to be an ace for the Cubs throughout the 2024 season bring a new wave of American card collecting fans with him along the way.
Getting his professional start in the NPB starting in 2016 with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars, Imanaga burst onto the scene in MLB throwing a two-hit, 9-K, six shutout inning performance in his first start.
As the Cubs were chasing a Wild Card spot, Imanaga threw meaningful innings producing a 15-3 record with a 2.91 ERA. In 173.1 innings pitched, Imanaga struck out 174 allowing just 28 walks keeping his WHIP to 1.02 through 29 starts.
The ace pitching has continued into 2025 carrying a 2.54 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched through nine starts. Batters are only averaging .198 against Imanaga so far this season.
Topps and their many lines did a great job of showcasing Imanaga providing chase worthy rookie cards. One of the rare and fantastic releases was the 2004 Topps Chrome Logofractor Autographs Superfractors #RCASI Shota Imanaga – a 1-of-1. All Imanaga Chrome Superfractors released by Topps in 2024 were 1-of-1 cards.
