Press Pass releases National show card plans

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Press Pass has unveiled its plans for this year’s National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore in early August and it’s one that will include a bit of mystery.

Mystery packs … and mystery locations for finding them (at least for now).

The Charlotte, N.C.-based manufacturer of NASCAR, non-sport and football draft picks cards will actually not be setting up a booth at the NSCC this year because it is moving to a new office location in Charlotte during the week of the show. Instead, the company will do its mystery pack promotion and wrapper-redemption program through a selected number of dealers at the show — a list that will be announced in advance of the event.

Collectors will get one blind-wrapped “Mystery Pack” for each hobby box of 2012 Press Pass NASCAR product purchased on the show floor, according to the company. (The eligible racing products are Press Pass, Total Memorabilia, Ignite , Redline and Showcase). Each pack will include a National Exclusive Showcase base set parallel numbered to 5 or a 1/1. If it’s not one of those cards, it will be a random autograph or race-used memorabilia card.

It’s a shame, that PP will not be here at this convention. Although definitely not as flashy as the big three booths (Panini, UD, and Topps), they always had something going on, be it activities, pack wars, giveaways (who could forget the “not card to get on card” promo), friendly people, and a constant buzz. Both in Baltimore ’10(My first convention) and Chicago ’11, this was a fun booth to be in. I’m not sure how this will play out, but it sure won’t be the same.
